Ran across a dead flat the other day down on P2. It looked a little shy of 40 inches and looked like a healthy fish beside it floating belly up. Any one else see many floaters this time of year???? Seemed a bit odd but guess there could be hundreds of reasons

I wonder if it has to do with barge tugs. They sure can churn up the water and ive seen them go pretty shallow. I wonder if that flat was sitting in the middle of a snag and got killed when the tug came by. Just a thought.

There was a nice snaggy spot on the MN river that I saw tugs go right over. Im suprised more have not been seen.

Remember guys (you know who you are) “dont move a little… move a lot” (barge captain last year)

I believe the Old Ralph and Manny found a big flathead at the mouth of the Minnehaha creek dead or dying one year, in the spring I believe. They said this one looked completely healthy (the one in this thread), so I don’t think a barge hit it. My guess would be that some just keel over in the winter when they go dormant and the metabolism is low. Maybe they just make it through the winter and are too weak to pull out of the dormancy, especially with the fast current. Plus the current probably moves dead cats out of their deep holes. Just a thought.

Yeah, fish die all the time. Just sucks when it’s a nice one. I spotted a dead HUGE flathead on the St. Croix last year when we were on an office boat trip.

You are correct, blacksportsman(manny), and RalphtheNoober(Ralph) had a 48″ flathead come floating in last year or the year before at Minnehaha Creek somewhere around this time.

Probably just a coincidence… but old fish do eventually die. Pug is likely right on the winter being the most likely time, or cold water seasonal transitions.

That fish wouldn’t have looked nearly as big in this “Ralph’s” hands

Maybe so.. but a 48″ flathead isnt going to look small in anyones hands! Too bad they didnt get a weight on that fish.
