Good spot?

Hey guys. I am going down to southern MN to fish this weekend. I have a spot picked out that I have always wanted to try in high water. Thought I’d run it by you guys to see what you think.

A creek runs into the main river at this point, creating a long sandbar that runs downstream, I think it will be submerged in high water. There is a deep pool/trough that runs directly out from the creek. About 50 yards downstream of the creek, on the opposite side of the river are many submerged trees and lots of loose lumber.

Does this spot sound productive in high water? Where would you consider the best spots to position the bait?

Also – many people use this as a ‘money’ walleye spot in the early spring.

This is on the MN river, but that forum seems to be in lockdown mode until flathead season starts.

D, I’m guessing you’re trying for flats? Well, either way, I would fish the currant seams of where the creek spills into the main river.

Also, as in Chris Winchester’s artical last year…drop your cut bait into the first deep hole down stream of the feeder creek. The dead of the year will be dropping down into that hole and there will be (at least) one big channel waiting for you there…many times flats.

Knockem dead (that’s a figure of speech!) and let us know how it worked out for you.

Brian – I was actually going to target channels as flats are still a little ways off.

I was planning on hitting the current seams, especially those near depth and the back side of the sand bar.

The real question is whether the wood will be holding fish. It is a pretty straight shot into the timber and the river runs shallower on that side.

Water temp would be key here. Fish the warmest water. They might even go right up that stream.

Another thing D, It is only one spot. Try all over it and fish were you get the most bites.
