Hey guys what baits have you guys tried besides worms? Have shad been tried out? Also I think I heard 1 flat should be good for the two of us…is that right?

I bring this up because I just realized it is only 2 weeks away!

Anybody know the official count on how many will be there?

    So many questions

Bring up anything you want..just don’t forget the worms!

One flat per two anglers should be good…unless the pout and suckers are really thick!

    No official count yet.

Now last year I brought some Canadian special agent night crawlers and they performed well. I know of three Canadians that plan on attending. If anyone wants to order some Canadian beer PM me, we’ll fix you up.

    Brian,

Do you recommend one flat per two guys per day?

Or one flat for two guys for the trip?

On a side note, I need to order some flats from HOF, so if anyone is having problems getting crawlers, let me know, and I can bring some up for you

    Thanks,
    Brent

One flat will be plenty for the entire trip for two people.

You might also want to bring an auger and some tip ups.

    Thanks Dtro.

Can we watch tip ups while drinking beer at the lodge ?

Dtro is correct if your fishing Fri night, Sat and Sun morning…and the pout and suckers aren’t on the rampage.

Last year I don’t think anyone used more that 3/4 of a flat, but very few pout were caught.

One suggestion about the crawlers. This year, I’m buying one of those $3. minnow buckets to put the crawlers into. The flats do not come with covers and I know one guy that was pulling out worms from his boat last fall.

Using a pail, I’ll be able to bring the worms inside if it gets too hot. (think positive with me guys!)

One other thing that hasn’t been mentioned, or at least I haven’t seen it yet, is to bring sunscreen……..and use it

I learned the hard way last year and wound up with a major case of lobster face.

Even with the cool temps, the sun is very strong this time of the year.

The only reason that you caught that pout was because someone mentioned there might be a contest.

Dtro’s was the largest one caught.

A cooler for the crawlers is a must have for the crawlers with a tight fitting lid. I couldnt believe how many got out of the flat and the places they managed to get in the boat, they were everywhere . I thought I had most of them out, but after it warmed up and the stink coming from the boat, I knew I didnt get them all. I had to disconnect the batteries and fill the RP several times with water and pull the plugs before the stench was gone
    lesson learned that time.
Also there are a lot of white and red tail suckers to be caught, so if you wanna bring back some great cut bait, bring a cooler with to get them home
Wish I could go this year, it is sure to be a great time

If you insist on having the entire flat of crawlers with you, a 5 gallon bucket with a styrofoam minnow bucket liner works great. Those large capacity(4 gallons or so?) buckets found at most bait shops. If you dont take the whole flat in the boat, the 1 gallon(approx) styro buckets also fit tight in a 5 gallon bucket.

It saves lots of spills! If they do tip over, the crawlers are usually just sitting on the inside of the bucket.

Cattin Addict.. you think those crawlers were bad, I had a 14″ northern squirm out of my hands and shot like an arrow and got underneath my flooring through the bilge area many years back. That fish was not coming out without disassembling the entire boat. The stink went away in about a week in the hottest summer months(cooked it). A few years later I did replace the flooring, and I had a perfect *northern fossil* on the aluminum of my boat! There was an entire textured skeleton. It made it all the way to the center of the boat under the flooring. It looked pretty cool

Last year the bait shops up there had worms available…by the doz…for a very short while.

Remember the walleye season is close. Normally these resorts are closed and everyone goes on vacation before they come back for the opener.

The point is…don’t count on getting worms up there if you run out…Last year I heard there were some guys sleeping with them to protect them.

DOnt forget your bait rags for after handling all those crawlers. Last year we where cuttig all the crawlers into small pieces before putting on the hook. The hands and pant legs where looking pretty skanky by the end of the day.
