VHS and catfishing

This should level the playing field a little on the River. WI residents will no longer legally be able to use sunfish on the river for cats unless they are caught on the river due to the VHS laws. Also, no one can bring bullheads from MN over to WI and launch their boat, or even fish there for that matter. No one can bring any minnows into or out of MN and WI. Unless they are tested to be disease free. This is a Federal Law.

    Just a little clarification from Chris’s post…

Because this law talks about state lines…the train track to train track, border waters..state rule doesn’t apply. This is a Federal law…and if you launch on the WI side with your live bait, legally you would not be able to cross the imaginary state line and fish MN…and vice a versa.

I sure hope this does not include border waters!

Unfortunately, as the law sits right now it DOES include border waters. That is what has all the walleye and bass tournament guys up in arms. No one took border waters into consideration when passing this law. We all feel it should be managed as a watershed because they are conjoined waters, and not “State Lines” that the fish do not live by anyway.

I believe that was always the case. You could only use fish (except game fish) for bait that were caught in the waters you were fishing.

This isn’t a change at all – we couldn’t transport bluegills between waters before.

I’m all for managing it as a watershed – just not according to Minnesota’s view of how the watershed should be managed!

    ..and that’s the WI DNR’s veiw too…

MN doesn’t want to follow WI’s guidelines either…hence, screwed up border water laws…but that’s another topic.
