Flathead spawn?

When do the flatheads spawn on the Mississippi in pools 2,3, and 4? I’m heading out tonight and hoping for a good night, but I am worried about the spawn producing a slow night.

They spawn after the channels and the channels are not spawned yet so I wouldn;t worry about your trip///

Thanks for the info mavzer. Just got back from an all nighter. We had a pretty good luck. Largest flathead was 35 lbs. Also managed a 12 lb channel on a big live sucker. I will be heading out again tonight.

last night i was catching some smaller flaties….(6lbs or so) that had eggs running out of them.

I don’t know what mine had, but it was the worst smelling, get over everything, I think my boat is now ruined stuff I have ever seen! I have never seen that before. We thought it might have something to do with the spawn, but because it was so nasty we thought they were having severe bowel movements. I pressure washed my entire boat and my garage still smells so bad I gag when I go in there.

MikeT – I know what you mean. Kind of gross isn’t it? I went to Menards and picked up a couple of their cheaper rugs, they had several in the 4′ X 4″ size for about $5 each. They trimmed up real easy with a scissors and I made a catfish rug for the front and back of my boat. Now I don’t worry if I get slimed or not. I hose them off when I get home and hang them out to dry. Don’t leave them in the boat when you are trailering it though or they will blow out. I roll them up and stuff them in my truck.

None of the females I got last night were dripping spawn yet. Remember, the cat spawn is a more drawn out affair than most other fish. On July 13th last year I got a nice fish that was still dripping spawn.

What does female flathead spawn look like? I caught three that might have been dripping.
