I respect the bass guys as they do this all day long with seldom a mess.

HA! I knew it. Throwing 3 ounces of lead and a bully with a baticaster is way easier than throwing 1/8th ounce lures for bass on a baitcaster. Like BK said, it’s tough to really mess up an Abu Garcia with that kind of weight.

A good example is FlatheadWI who used spinning outfits, Aburdeen style hooks and if I recall correctly mono.

That’s 100% right – except for the parts about the hooks and the line… I use Kahles and 80-100lb braids (PowerPro and some 100lb Berkley Whiplash that I still have stockpiled).

As far as this “cranking power” thing – the way I fight flats I don’t rely on cranking power. I palm the spool to turn the fish then fight pretty light as long as they’re not making runs away from me. I just pump and reel. I’ve never figured out how to have the drag cranked down tight enough to use the reel for cranking power without having it too tight for the boatside fight.

I think we are all starting to figure out there is no perfect answer, andthere never will be. One of the best things all of can do is be open to change.. wheather its location or equipment.

At this point in time I could probably come up with a different rig perfect for each of my common spots I fish on the river, and I wouldnt be near comfortable with 1 combo to cover every spot, or 1 simple rig on the end of the line.

Flathead fishing isnt exactly finess fishing, but it does make a difference what you have on the end of your rod. What works one place doesnt always work 1 mile away.

Fishing shallow, deep, open areas, snags, culverts, water cannons, concrete debris, rubble, steel walls…. and thats only a few spots!

Theres no other fish to chase in MN and hook into a 40# fish that will run you 50′ into a culvert your standing on, then come out into the *water cannon*, then run you along the conrete wall hitting every jagged rock or concrete on the way.. if that doesnt shake the hook, they run back deep in the heavy current and make you lift them like a barn door… just to make a last ditch effort by scrapin the steel 3″ barge tie off cable before your partner can net the fish.

Sounds like you got an itch that needs to be scratched Dave. We are almost there buddy. Those water temps in the river will almost be reading 50 tomorrow…unfortunately I think we have all heard that the air temp is going to normalize in the coming week.

    I knew that!

If I get my bills paid and some mugs up…I’m thinking I might have a free day tomorrow…for fishen… Forget Sherry needs some info…I’ll just have to tell her I was busy…she’ll never know.

The FW wants me to wait until Easter to get the boat home…I don’t think I can do it.
