I heard everyone is doing well with cut bait. I have some whole frozen smelt. Has anyone tried that stuff or am I better off with something else? Does Moores carry any cut bait or maybe I’ll check with vados?

Stop in at Moores.. he has Shad, by far the best bait around.

I find it best to use one of the bait fish that live in the river system that I’m fishing. I like to use fresh suckers and cut those up.

    Yeppers…

Thats what makes Shad so great down in the cities here. The St Croix, Mississippi, and Minnesota have large numbers of shad in the system.

For the Red & Red Lake Rivers, I really like Goldeyes but Suckers are right up there too.

Actually, sucker works just about everywhere.

hey guys, my 1st post on here. lot of you guys know me from the other website round these parts. i just wanted to chime in and say how lucky i am that my best friend is always out catching shad in the vermillion and freezing it, so i never have to buy it or get it myself. havent done much catting since i just barely started last year, but i want to try and give chicken livers a run this year. are there more specific times to use them or is anytime a good time to try? hopefully some of you guys will be down at MR on sunday, as i am hoping to make it out for my first time this year. later

    Brian-

I’ve had luck with chicken livers once the water temps get up there a little more. I usually don’t even break out the liver tub until summer. Not because they don’t work, but because I have so much better luck on shad and sucker when the water is this cool.

Also, it seems that most of the fish I catch on livers or chicken guts are on the smallish side. Maybe that’s just me.

That seems to be the norm. Chicken livers, crawlers and stink baits generally produce smaller fish it seems. Although I believe BK caught some decent channels at Everet’s with stink-bait. Technically, everything Brian touches becomes stink bait.
