Just for that I am keeping all the bass I catch this year…that’s right, 2 or 3 bass will be taken out of the gene pool.

I would imagine they either ate it or got it mounted….They do things different down in VA, that’s for sure…

I guess Slop! I’ve gone as far as kissing a cat before…but…

Seriously, the least expensive mount for that size flat is about $600. from the places i’ve check.

I’m thinking it fed the clan.

Leaving it on the floor is no differant that putting it in the live well. Ends up (hopefully) on a table either way.

Maybe they were just to scared to touch that smelly thing . brought the boat to the closest dealer and traded it in smell and all

Catfish is popular down there. It isn’t as hard on the local dentistry as say road kill.

We can use bass as bait right? Better than bullheads and easier to catch!

    “Stupid Bass Guys”

In my opinion, edit it. Say what you want within the boundaries of what the website allows but fact of the matter is the press, the anti’s, the public pressure on out sport (fishing) is bad enough without sportsman throwing stones even if they are little ones. 5 months ago, I reluctantly went with my wife to a friends wedding. I was excited to learn that one of the guys who would be sitting at our table was working hard at becoming a professional fisherman.. I thought “sweet” this isn’t going to be so bad after all. I was wrong & despite my best efforts to talk passionately about fishing.. it was the same old argument.. Ford vs Chevy, Dodge vs Ford, Bass vs Walleye, PETA vs Sportsman & so on. Let’s all try to focus a little more on the greater picture. We’re all fisherman & we all get some type of rush from whatever game or species we’re after. If you create (even if inadvertantly) a forum that isolates a category of people just for a few peoples questionable actions, it doesn’t promote the sport in a good light at all. People will feel isolated & leave.. followed by reduced donations.. then followed by reduction in sponsors.

I know this sounds flipant and maybe stupid to us here up north, but a lot of those folks down there eat the bigger flatheads. They claim that they are better eating than a Channel or Blue. When you see these guys noodling, they are hoisting 20 pounders over the side of the boat like a sack of potatos onto the floor. Who is b!tching about that? These guys happened to be bass guys who were keeping the fish. I would cut them some slack.
    Just my $.02.

Before this gets too carried away…if you guys knew the poster MplsPug…besides saying that he’s ugly…you would say he’s a great sports person. Not much of a fisherman…but a good guy none the less. Thank me later for the compliments Pug.

We all know there are people that keep our “loved” fish and leaving it on the floor of the boat…hurts. It would be the same as if an artical was about flathead fishing, but they couldn’t catch any flats…just bass and filled the floor with them..or…45lbs of them.

Pug and I are both seeking counciling over this artical…we’ll be ok…and Thanks for caring!

Chris…you haven’t met pug…it’s going to take him 3 or 4 years to catch that many bass.

No reason for a debate here boys

There was no harm meant to any fisherman, just a word used in a situation where there was a lack of a better one.

example… Brian K wouldnt have thrown one of the 30″ walleyes on the floor of his boat last year and let it sit because it happened to bite his bullhead and it was a *undesireable*.. what would the walleye guys say?

Irrelavent, doesnt make a difference.. It was Pug showing he didnt appreciate an unexplained disrespect to a fish specie.

If Pug cant catch a bass to keep, I’ll catch one for him for the filleting instructional video, and he can have a segment how to cook it

I suspect the catfish that was kept was for food purposes myself. I would think it would be a hinderance to haul around a fish like that just to make waste of it.

I dont see a reason to make a big deal out of nothing, especially when the post was questioning possible publisized(sp?) poor sportsmanship. If in fact that fish was wasted, I dont like the idea that it was brought to the spotlight in a non-offensive manner.

I like my innuendo of pug not being able to catch one better.

This story is a non-factor. What is the difference between mounting a 7lb bass and eating a 40lb catfish???? They are the same thing and there’s nothing wrong with keeping a fish as long as you don’t abuse the law or the resource. People have been eating catfish and bass for thousands of years. Big deal.

Besides, I dont even think flatheads are native east of the Appalacians. They could be invasive for all I know

Like TheodoreNugget said, we need to start talking about decent topics. I know some of this stuff is “tongue in cheek” but its gettin old.

    Allrightythen!

This may be off the wall but here goes…I’ve been thinking of primitive fishing techniques lately. since I’m too scared to noodle for cats, I want to do the next best thing, catch a big flathead on a simple handline. No rod, no reel, just me and the fish.

Anybody here try it before? Do you still have all your fingers?

    Yikes!!!
Ive seen some people hand lining on the MN river. Ive seen them catch small fish. You probably want to bring some kind of gloves.
I had a big flat snap a rod last year. I cringe to think what would have happened to my hands!!!
Good luck, I bet it will be a rush.

I told you they’d all come running and being defensive.
If you take a look in my tackle box you will find more lures and equipment for bass fishing. The good lord knows I wouldn’t keep a bass, well unless I gut hooked the guy and after 20 minutes of tireless reviving he was still belly up. At that point I’d feel guilty wasting the poor guy.

I’m not really upset that these guys kept it either. Like I said before, I forgot that there was the little section on the home page that displays recent posts as I was just addressing the cat guys here to tweak them. I’d probably have chosen a better title had I realized that.

Nugget, you are obviously a little sensitive to it now and I think your recent experience at the wedding probably didn’t help. For that I’d like to apologize, even though my catting friends probably will give me crap about it, I think it’s the right thing to do. I don’t care what your fish is or what you fish for. As long as you fish, you’re alright in my book…just stay away from my spots.

One of the hardest emotions to communicate through a keyboard with words is sarcasm.

I know mplspug was being sarcastic with that remark. Brian knows it, Dave knows it, Larry knows, Ralph knows it, etc. All the guys who frequent the cat forum know it.

The problem is the guys who don’t read the cat forum and happen to pop in and read what is written. How does it appear now? What may be funny in the cat forum may not fly so well with the rest of the fishing community.

I know we like to joke around and have fun but the comments, joking, stories, etc are available for all the public to read and interpret as they choose. As a catfisherman and member of this community, we need to be responsible with the image and ethics we portray online.

People are reading. People are watching. People are forming opinions – both good & bad.

That’s my serious thought for the day.

I have a whole lot of money invested in fishing rods, and my fngers dont grow back!

If you ever try it,I wouldnt recommend using anythng less than nylon rope similar to whats on a lawnmower recoil unit. Any super line would be dangerous. Maybe 100# mono and a good pair of gloves?

Yeah, I think gloves are a no brainer. I figure some trotline twine would work. Close to 200lb test. It would have to be big enough to get a decent grip on it. My main concern in this is I will probably need some kind of “reel” so I dont get my line tangled up. If that fish needs to run, I may have to give some line out.

Hey pug, sorry if I sounded grumpy in my other post. I just got tired of people complaining about nonsense.
I know you love bass and probably have more hula-poppers than no-rolls.
