Cat Tip of the Day: Organizing your hooks

I’ve been spending some time getting organized for the upcoming season. I just finished getting my hooks organized and I thought I would share an idea I found off the internet. Most of us have an extensive collection of hooks from large size to small size, in a variety of hook types from J hooks to Circle hooks to Kahle hooks. I’ve been using safety pins to store my hooks on. You can match the hooks up by size and type and store them on separate safety pins. I used some large Quilters Safety pins for my large 2/0 to 10/0 cat hooks and small safety pins for my other smaller hooks. It doesn’t take much time at all to organize your hooks and you will find it easy to inventory and even easier to store all your hooks. If you store all your hooks in a plastic storage box by size you can run out of bins to put them in. I just bin my hooks in my storage box by type of hook and then just search through the safety pins for the size I want. I thought I would pass this on to all of you busily preparing for the upcoming catfish season.

Great idea Steve with the safety pins!

I have my hooks well sorted through smaller plastic boxes, but its inevitable that a couple hooks will figure out a way to relocate themselves over time within the box which does become a burden when digging for a hook in the middle of the night.

I stock Gamakatsu Octopus hooks from #2-#10/0 in every size in bronze, and red finish in many of the sizes. And Gamakatsu Circle hooks from #2-#8/0(largest available).

I carry a lot of hooks. Any good tip on keeping them more organized is welcome!

    Steve,

Your military bearing is showing. Just a little time? I’ve never lost that many baits in 20 years.

I second what Dave said. I can get a bit sloppy when fishing and when your tackle box is rolling around, those hooks end up going everywhere in those plastic compartments. Would even be good for swivels. I know I bought some swivels that were on a piece of metal that clipped like a safety pin and that was nice too.

Kev, wait until you see Steve’s map system. It’s…well, fantasticly unbelievable!

I shouldn’t have said anything…and just watched your mouth drop.
