I have a friend over in Iraq and he is based by a river that is full of some type of catfish. I am sending him some fishing stuff but I am wondering what to send for bait. It would have to be some type of bait I can buy in a store and is in a container or something.

    Any suggestions??

I might recommend preserved shad, I’ve never had luck with them personally but they would ship well. You might try some Berkly power baits for Catfish, send him a few types.
Otherwise if you can get your hands on a cheap cast net.
    Let him net his own.

Any type of stink bait should work, and they come in either a tube or bag.

Maybe an ultra-light rod with some panfish tackle and little spinners to catch some fresh bait? Or maybe a minnow trap or a cast net? Then he’d have fresh bait whenever he wanted it.

Since I am sending a package, what do I send to put the stinkbait on? Special Hooks??

A known favorite is Sunny’s stink bait, which comes in a 15 oz plastic resealable jar. Other wise a cast net if leagal in that country, to harvest his own catbait.

I sure don’t qualify as a catfish guy so I’m probably talking out of turn….. But I’ve seen these rigs that look like a piece of ringworm threaded down onto the shaft of a treble hook. My guess is that you shove it down into the jar of magic stinky goop and fill all the gaps in the ringworm full of the stuff.

Is your friend in the military? Anything else he might need? Let us know!

How about this. Frozen cut bait, individually vac sealed. I got bored one winter night, and this is what I ended up with:

I don’t know how you could keep it frozen to Iraq, good luck!!!!

Hey Scott – Check out this link. Click on the catfish bait. I’ve never used it but the ingredients sound like they should work and it is packaged for shipping. You could probably order it to be shipped to Iraq. Give this a try: http://www.magicproducts.com/

Tell him we are all wishing him well and good luck with the fishing. If this stuff doesn’t work I am sure there is something awful in the Meals Ready to Eat (MRE’s) that would attract a catfish. Tell him to give that a try next.

Sadly, there is no more ham slice, no more four fingers of death, not even the omelet. Now they have jambalya and sloppy joes, it’s sad to see an old friend like the beef frankfurters go before their time!

Oh, and those cats will eat stink. I knew some guys while I was in theater that caught a pile of them with stink and powerbait.

Sonny’s is great bait but the container might explode and that would be messy. It comes in jars that are half full of air. I would go with something packaged for shipping. The power bait chunks would be what I would send. MREs have come a long ways. The just add water food heaters are sweet. Luck of the draw pork patties. Brings back memories. Thanks for supporting the troops.

Magic Bait stuff work pretty good. I’ve heard Spam is good also. Plus if he gets hungry while fishing, he’ll can have a snack.

If your sending tubes the do sell treble hooks that have a built in holder any Walmart will carry stuff like that.

Some light tackle to catch his own bait would be the wise choice. Does anyone even know if these fish are 2, or 200 pounds?

It would be silly to send a jar of stinky stuff if he is fishing for moby dick!
