Cat Tip of the Day: Pre-Tied Leader Caddy

A few weeks ago we had a discussion going on one of the posts about pre-tying and storing cat leaders. Most of us are looking for ways to organize our terminal tackle and rigs so that they are easier to handle in the dark. I was surfing on another catfish forum website and found this tip from a catfisherman that he uses to store his pre-tied leaders. It looked like a cheap and easy way to organize your leaders. Most of us are going nuts waiting for spring so you’ve got some time in the next month or so to organize your gear and I thought you might find this useful.

He made this caddy out of a piece of 2″ PVC pipe about 24″ long. He uses paper clips and rubber bands to secure his pre-tied leaders to the PVC pipe. He takes the paper clips and unfolds them in half so they have 2 hooks. He then tapes all the paper clips to one end of the PVC pipe. When done taping you should have an open loop showing from each of the paper clips. He ties his leaders to his desired length with a swivel attached to each leader. He then takes the swivel end of the leader and runs a rubberband through the swivel and loops it. He then hooks the rubberband to the hook on the paper clip and then just pulls the hook end of the rig down to the other end of the PVC pipe and hooks the hook on the edge of the pipe. You can put as many different hook sizes and leader lengths on the PVC pipe as you like. He has about 2 dozen on his caddy. He finds it super handy and that it saves a lot of time. He recommends trying to keep it out of the sunlight because the UV rays will break down the rubberbands.

That looks like it would work pretty good. It’s funny you posted this because I was just recently browsing the same info where you got this.

I actually went with the idea of a small three ring binder and small ziplocs bags. Pretied each rig and labeled according to length of leader and size of hook. One bag has beads and another has swivels. Punched a hole in each and now I’m good to go.

Also, I’ll be trying out a new tip light that I recently came across. I had a small LED that I used last year, and might come back to it. But it really hasn’t stood up to the elements as well I would have liked. This new one is supposed to last 100hrs

I think another thing I will be trying is some sort of snap for my bank sinkers. Larry gave me a few last year that worked pretty good (thanks Larry) but as I was respooling my rigs yesterday (yep I’m all done) I noticed that the plastic housing of the clips was wearing from the PP. Not a good thing

I think I’ll go with a big snap swivel so I can change up the size of my weight as needed. Unless I come across something better.

    ugh I got it bad

Darren – I think this picture is the idea you used for your small leader binder. I may make up a cat tip for this one too because I like how organized it is. This guy uses the plastic 3 hole page used for baseball cards.

I like the PVC idea, but considering how unorganized and sloppy I can get, I think I am going to go with the plastic bags and that baseball card book is an excellent idea.

    Keep the good info coming.
