Does anyone ever trim the spines off of the fins of bullheads so the Flatz can take’em down easer? Just wondering cuz I’ve done it and had some mixed results.

On that same note, do you split their gut or anything to get a little more stink down current?

No, I just trim the spines, it’s quit easy you can fellet them right off the fin and cut them off with a dog nail trimmer

you really shouldn;t have to trim them or anything… if the flathead is of any size what so ever then the flatheads mouth is difinatly big enough to devour anything…

I’ve experimented quite a bit with trimming the spines. I havent found any real difference yet. MAYBE trimming the spine on on side of a bullhead (or both) causes the bullhead to be “off center a bit” and struggle more on the end of your line. If I’m not getting bit on a regular bullhead I’ll trim the spine for something different. It possibly has added a couple flatheads to the boat. I also wonder if having the spines on a bullhead aids in setting the hook because they stick in the flatheads craw a bit making the hook pop free easier???

well, last night i figured i would go “test” some of these theories while fishing. .

I caught 3 fish,….and one wsa on e bullhead. THe odd part was, my hook was NOT even in the fish’s flesh or mouth! The little 5lb flattie just inhaled the baot and the spines were allready down his throat! I have caught several smaller flats that inhale the bait so far that its dang near to their stomach! Either way, as long as i land em i am happy
