Saw this on youtube take a look. The philosophy of carp fishing in the UK is very similar to flathead fishing here.

Reputation for being slightly nuts and pursuing one species of fish so relentlessly…Yeah, sounds like us.
I like the beeping strike indicator! Those guys wouldn’t believe how easy it is over here to catch them. They should use a bow, since there were plenty swimming by. Those mirror carp sure are puggy looking. Aren’t mirror carp starting to invade Minnesota now?
Aren’t Wels Cats the most popular? Isn’t pike fishing big over there too?
February 16, 2007 at 2:53 am #537594Mirror carp have been ’round these here parts for quite some time. Maybe it’s the grass carp you’re referring to?? For anyone who’s never given it a try those European guys love carp fishing because it’s extremely fun. To me no other fish besides maybe a Chinook Salmon caught in the river during spawn times fights better. Get out there and give it a try, you will not be disappointed!
February 16, 2007 at 3:06 am #537602…and yes, after watching that video catfishing can be the same.. Sometimes very boring. But if you get into a good spot for carp you will give up fishing before the bite stops. Sore arms and very sore wrists is all I can say!
February 16, 2007 at 3:23 am #537607Jeremy.. I agree, carp fight! .. but I can tell you havent been sturgeon fishing yet, they write a whole new book on fighting. A mid 40″ sturgeon will put a 30# carp to shame.
I spent a lot of time while younger with friends on the Minneapolis lakes carp fishing. My largest to date is 42# out of Lake of the Isles on 6# test line and a walleye rod. We have caught many in the upper 30# class.
I cant remember if it was big marine, or bald eagle that a friend of mine made the cover of bowhunter magazine with many years ago.. a 86# carp.
The mirror carp comment, they have been here a long time. I think they are cool looking. We got out 1st grass carp in town here about 15 years ago, there are some around.
I am not looking foreward to the inevitable to happen, but eventually we will have the big head carp to chase too. I’m going to have to get a suit of armore to go catfishing at night if those are jumping out of the water at the boat!
February 16, 2007 at 3:26 am #537609I have spent many nights down at watergate marina pulling in on an average night 60 carp ranging from 2 lb to 12 lbs. On medium walleye gear that can be very challenging. Very fun in the early spring time.
February 16, 2007 at 3:57 am #537618There’s definately some monsters in Lake of the Isles. My biggest out of there is around 25 lbs. My biggest to date is Harry the Carp in my avatar…46″X30″. Sunrise River…one of the best monster carp fisheries around.
February 16, 2007 at 4:52 am #537658Mirror carp are pretty cool fish. Here’s a close-up of one my dad caught last spring.
Jeremy, I’d love to try carp fishing with you sometime if you wouldn’t mind. Most of mine have come unintentionally while sucker fishing or with a bow and arrow. I’d like to actually have some luck targeting them.
February 16, 2007 at 5:00 am #537660Any time Ralph! We’ll have a blast. Jut PM me to figure out a time and date.
P.S. Awesome looking fish there!!!!!February 16, 2007 at 3:27 pm #537753My largest todate was a 22 pounder. Caught while gill fishing on Big Eden Lake.
By the time I got it in, I had tears rolling down both cheeks from laughing so hard. Twenty minutes of arm numbing fun!
Landed her on a 8 weight fly rod with a three pound tippit!
I believe to this day, that was the most fun I’ve ever had standing up!
February 16, 2007 at 3:30 pm #537755I’ve never seen one of those before (mirror carp). But then I haven’t seen a blue sucker in person either.
One of these days someones going to catch a shark by Minnihaha Falls!
February 16, 2007 at 3:51 pm #537767BTW, that mirror carp came from the Mississippi north of St. Cloud.

Funny you should bring that up again. I found this while Googling the Minnihaha creek system.
Shark Tales No More. Live Sharks Caught in Minnehaha CreekFebruary 16, 2007 at 4:24 pm #537795Mirror carp are cool looking fish. The 1st few I caught I thought were mutated or something. The scales are different on each fish. I have got a couple that only had a single row down the lateral line on each side, one that just had a row down the back… each one is unique. The scales are huge at any size, but they get monsterus on the large fish. I have only caught one over 10 pounds, and that was about a 20# fish. The scales were baseball size.
February 16, 2007 at 6:11 pm #537887If you like catching big fish, as most catfisherman do, carp are a blast
February 17, 2007 at 6:03 pm #538245Here is mine from this past fall caught while fishing for sturgeon. It beat me to a pulp!
