Just got back in from an all-nighter. Four flatheads. No big ones. Largest 20 lbs. Had one that must have been between 35-45-lbs up to the boat twice and then lost him on a sunken log. The dang thing bit a piece of cut bait on a channel cat rod. Lucky for him. Mike and Steve, the night went something like this –

slow for me ………all my action has been on cutbait. NONE of livebait………yet. But then again, i havent had ALOT of action lately . …arrrgh!………lol

What time of day/night were ya getting yr hits Dirk?? I have only had time to put in short nights. Out usually until 12 or 1 am……..not too long of a night when it comes to flatheads. Its a pain in the azz pulling allnighters in a flatbottom john with no seats, but that doenst seem to stop me….

I use my favorite fold up lawn chair in my jon when fishing cats at night. Problem is that it was my wifes favorite chair too. Not any more though with a little too much fish slime, crawler dirt, cut bait scales, guts and liver droppings.

bad night of cattin last night…. turned good…. launched out of everts resort around 10 p.m last night and went to a favorite flathead spot to set up for the night got anchored and ready to fish and realized that I had forgotten the live baite…. I was two budies, (max, lenny) so we pulled anchor went back into the everts and it was locked up with our suckers so we decided to give the channels a go…..
Cought some nice Channels for a the first hour and a half until we heard a boat coming thru the dark….. MUDCATKID…. saves the day ….well night and gives us some livebaite for flatheads…..
Thanks a ton Mudcat… Biggest catfish of the night ended up bieng cought on the bullhead you gave us…..55 pound flathead ……. It took about 20 minutes to land the beast…. in some tight cover…..

There is no picture.. of the cat.. I should have takent he digital camera with me…. but I didn;t I should have drove her into Vick’s house for a polariod but I didn;t ….. The only thing we had was a 40 pd scale that we measured her on. and it bottomed out…. so the 55 lbs is a pretty good estimate… It was at least 50 and maybe closer to 60 so I went with 55 lbs… not a real… exact wieght ….. but it was the first flathead fishing trip for two of my buddies…. so it was very special….

Most of my bites have been right around dusk to an hour after not that it means much. I just got back from a little flathead foray from about 8-11pm. 3 runs, one fish. And a 27 inch walleye that nailed a six inch bullhead. First time iv’e had a eye hit a bait that big. June 6th mike, Jun 6th!! Whata fish that must have been!! Cant wait to here the details!!

We’re located on Pool 4 of the Mississippi River…..North or Red Wing about 3 miles, across the river….just below the dam a couple miles.

Hey bowfinhunter! It’s been a while. Got any good fishing stories lately? Me and my bro have been fishing the Miss. above coon rapids dam. caught the first carp of the year (biggest only about 6 lbs.) and some midget channel cats. Nothing big to report so far but we haven’t been to the flathead hole yet.

By the way, does anyone know why my pic isn’t showing? Or how I can get it to work???

Nice fish. When to move is the eternal question. When me and Mavzner fish channels its 10 minutes per spot on smaller rivers and maybe a bit longer on larger ones. If we dont get bit we move on. Flatheads, well, thats different. We stick it out out to maybe 1 1/2 hours on spots we have confidence in. Sometimes longer in super duper spots. But really you need to keep on moving because thats how you develop your milk run of spots. I dont know if the fish will be in that snag all summer?? When you burn it out just keep on moving and then try it again a week later. You may have found yourself a honey hole that will produce for years to come. The spawn is coming. Fishing will slow for awhile then pick back up again.
