I had the pleasure of taking out my friend from Hudson and long time IDA supporter, Mr Eyejacker last evening.
After fishing the P4 dam are for cats the last month or so and being the only boat in the area…I was surprised to see 4 or so boats up by the dam when we arrived at 5 pm. That’s a sure sign that the walleye/sauger bite is starting to turn on. Kinda made me feel..crowded…
It wasn’t too long and the Eyejacker started nailing the channel cats. Well.. to be honest…we BOTH had about an hour of nibbles that we couldn’t get a hook into. I’m guessing these were small channels or sheeps head. The shad that we were using would come in munched on…skinless and at times only the head with a nice, crisp jaw pattern bite…
Towards sunset the channels started to actually bite and EJ’s first channel to the boat weighed in at 6 lbs. (photo above) The belly on this guy was so plump, I was guessing her at 12 lbs.
For the next couple hours it was channel after channel with the exception of a couple sheephead mixed in. EJ wouldn’t let me take a picture of him with a sheepie…I don’t know why not??? Stillakid would have been proud!
As the night went on…starting around 8 pm, it seemed like the cat’s moved out and the sturgeon moved in as we caught more and more sturgeon and less and less channels.
Before we packed up at 10 pm EJ had 3 40+ in sturgeon under his belt.
I think it was the first one that wrapped around the back anchor…(I know…I should have pulled it up right away…but hey, I’m getting old!) I quickly found out what holding onto Power Pro with a fish on the other end can do. Although I just recieved a “paper cut”, I’m sure a big fish that takes a dive will slice your finger to the bone before a person can react.
Maybe it’s time to break out the gloves!
