It wasnt a big fish.. but hey, it was a sturgeon! Now that he caught his 1st, he ca go on to catching the big ones!
We made it out from about 7 a.m to noon yesterday bouncing around various locations at different depths. There is a shortageof current(there is none), and no shortage of baitfish. We seen several large fish rolling in the morning hours, and picked up several monsters on the depth finder with many of the fish suspended at least 10′ abouve the bottom.
The fish pictured in the earlier post is the only sturgeon we landed. Joe hooked into one more very large fish at the end of the outing(was on when we were reeling up to leave) which did a very good job of peeling some serious drag and giving a tug of war match for a short period of time before the line went limp.
I made it back out shortly after sunset to give it another try. We got greeted by a healthy 5 lb channel cat within minutes, 15 minutes later we had the sky flickering pretty good so we decided to put the boat back on the trailer and head out shorefishing for the remainder of the evening.
The bite was strange yesterday. I dont know if the changing weather had anything to do with it, but I hve never seen so many light bites and the fish would just go away without doing any damage to the bait We were using crawlers, shad, and fresh cut sucker fillets. The sturgeon took a shad, and I believe the big fish later also took a shad. Crawlers worked on sheephead and a bluegill
Aftr we left the croix last night and got to the mississippi river to our shorefishing locaton.. the fish were feeding heavy once the rain started. The fish were very active and were fighting like crazy. Maybe the fish on the croix were sitting tight waiting for the front to hit?
I am not dissapointed with the trip. We have an excellent season ahead of us and its only a matter of time before the sturgeon are feeding heavy too
