Holy Cow! Look at those rods lined up! Nothing could have made it through there!

The only thing I see missing from those pics…is ME and maybe the fw.

Say Brandy, I have a 12v electric blanket for sale…

Nice fish Mr. T Holm, Hanson must not have rubbed off on you…as your line would have broke if he did.

    Some dandy looking whiskers!

That’s only a few of the rods, Brian.

I should have put captions. That is actually Sara in the lounge chair. She is AquaJoe’s sister.

How big did that carp go?

We didnt think to get a wieght or measurment. My guess it was between 7-10lbs. We had to get a pic for posterity, and to run it by the rest of you, we thought it was highly unusual that the carp hit the frozen shad. It came in pretty easy till it got under the by boat and then it was all over the place. I thought for sure I had a “ringer” channel. Dtro and I scratched our head for a couple minutes trying to figure out why a carp would hit frozen shad. Best we could come up with is maybe it had the consistancy of a Night Crawler?!?!?!
    Go Figure.
    It was still fun though.
    Nice Pics Dtro.

    Briank,

I’m still working on hooking a fish with the determination to bust my line. I’ll keep trying till it happens. I’m not easily detoured.

    Flathead or BUST.

Larry… we have got a few carp on shad too. I think anything tht can fit a shad in their mouth eat them. I seen a mid 30″ class northern caught on one tonight too, I caught a dogfish a couple weeks ago, sheephead on occasion.. I dont think anything will surprise me on them.

Thanks for the input Dave, It did surprize me… but what your saying makes sense. It was a curveball at the time.
I have gotten a lot of sheep head on the shad.
I bet the Northern would have been fun, and an unexpected surprize.

I’ve watched “feeding time” in the Cabela’s tanks and the carp will actually chase down fatheads and sucker minnows. I was amazed by that, so I can see them eating cut shad.

Funny we caught one about #15ish on shad friday night also. I do know they do feed on other fish. Seem to me that in the spring/fall we catch them more on Minnows, fatheads, and even jigs. We catch them while walleye fishin. They’re pretty fun on wally gear.

I am pretty sure they will eat about anything available to them. One of my favorite techniques for taking them on light tackle is to use a crawfish or dark colored jig and slowly reel it across the bottom. You need a flat, snag-free bottom to work, sand bars being the best. I figured that technique out one year while fishing for smallies. I would have never thought I could catch a carp on a jig before that happened, at least not reliably, but it was very effective.

I think a carp will eat just about anything it can get into its mouth. I have had them destroy cut sucker many a time.

Trying to get a big circle hook out of their rubbery mouth is no fun.

We catch buffalo carp quite frequently on cranks too, always mouthhooked……….. glad it happens to other folks too, I thought there was something wrong with me.
