Its getting to be that time of year again. The channel cats seem to be schooling back up and they are on a search for food.
It was another good night tonight, we will post pictures tomorrow. Once again it seemed the bait was key. The fish didnt want to have anything to do with anything except whole shad. The bite started in a frustrating way in the daylight hours.. soon after your line hit the water the piranas were pecking away at our bait. Tyler managed to get a hook into one of these little guys and it turned out to be a 10″ Flathead? The nibblers dissapeared as the sun set and the rod tips finally got a break. Shortly after darkness set in, I managed a channel around 3 pounds. Things were quiet for about another 15 minutes and my rod doubled over in the rod holder and the fight was on with an obviously decent fish. A few seconds later, I noticed the rod next to me bending over as I was fighting my fish.. that fish was hooked and there were 2 fish on. After I stepped to the side a few feet, a *dancing blue light* caught my attention and Tylers rod was doubling over.. 3 fish on at this point. I managed to land mine which was around 10 pounds, Bob Moore landed his weiging in around 5 pounds, and Tyler got his in at a respectable 6 or 7 pounds… A quiet evening sure got exciting in a hurry. After the flurry of activity, a fish or 2 was caught here and there for a short period of time and all went quiet again. About 45 minutes later my rod doubled over again, I got the rod out of the holder and about the ime I knew it was a good fish, the hook ripped out. A couple minutes later, Bobs rod had a good bite going and he lost his fish too. More quiet time went by and then Bob had yet another bite and his rod was bent as far as it was going to be. He started fighting the fish and next thing you know he was losing line.. the fish was making hard runs and didnt want anything to do with the shorline we were standing on. Eventually we beached the fish and put it on the scale and it weighed in at 15 pounds even. That was it for landed fish of the evening. We would have a couple bites in close proximity every so often for the next couple hours, we just couldnt keep a hook in the fish.
Not a big numbers night, but a respectable bite of good size fish. It became obvious the fish were schooled up and moving around, most likely chasing baitfish.
We were fishing the Mississippi river.. I cant give out too much info on the location because there is a contest coming up soon!
