Gotta watch this Brian guy like a hawk! I remember when Brian used to turn his nose up at stinkbait, and now he loves to inhale the aroma.
We now have 12 different kinds of stinkbaits! I even have some special stuff in the back room for Brian to test.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

I’m not falling for that old “in the back room” trick…you’re going to beat the stink bait out of me aren’t you!

Y’know Brian, this stinkbait stuff opens up a whole new arena of possibilities. I’m thinking we’ll need to try some through the ice this winter!

Yep, Mike’s definatley got some “new” items on the shelf. I stopped in and picked up some Sonny’s and some other catfish items on Friday. Looks good.

I tried some Sonny’s for the first time but I had trouble getting it to stick after the ribbed tube thing was wet. So a few paper napkins later I got it to stick real good. Man a person has to be carefull with that stuff. I got a little messy with it and yuk! That stuff is really stinky if get it on your finger tips and then itch your nose.

The river I was fishing does have a population of channel cats and I didn’t catch one. But I only gave it a try for about an hour and I only tried one hole. I wish the stink bait would stay on longer, In the slow current I had to reel in and re-glob again. Maybe every ten minutes or so. Is that normal?

Jury’s still out. And I am going to try it again in another hole.

I havent had any luck where we fish with stink bait, and we have tried a few different times on a few lines with various brands of stink bait including Sonny’s.

I am not saying it doesnt work, but it doesnt work for us at the location we are fishing. In fact, the only thing that has been productive now is cut shad, and a bullhead here and there.

    Hey Brian-

I gave the Sonny’s one heck of a workout on the Red River Friday pre-fishing for the Cat’s Incredible. I was hoping it was going to be my “super secret” slot fish bait. The slot fish are under 24″. Absolutely nothing! I think I had 2 taps and that was it. I made frequent bait changes as well as it washes off the “worm” fairly quickly. Around 90% of the fish prefishing were on cut sucker.

We’re not sitting really pretty in the standings after today either. I may have to break out the nightcrawlers tomorrow.

Anyone have any pointers for getting stinkbait to stay on longer? If you are going to stink you might as well do it for a long time.
    Thanks, Bill

I’ve always heard that. I always thought if you wetted the tube first then put the stinkbait on it would stay on longer. Any tips on making it stay ”on the tube ” longer when in the water?
    Thanks, Bill

Bill, with Sonny’s the tube can’t be wet. Sonny recommends taking a towel along, slide the tube up the leader, then use the towel to dry it off.

A couple other tips he gave me was to have more than two tubes. Use the bait container to store the lures in…leaving the leaders hang out over the side. When you need a new, baited lure…just grab a leader and snap it on to your line. Leave the wet one out to dry…or use the towel to dry it off.
Use the backside of a spoon to smear bait into the holes or ribs.

According to Sonny, if you are “gobbing” on the bait, you’re just wasting it. There only needs to be a thin film over the lure.

Here’s my tip. For the large containers of bait, use an ice cream pail as a containment container. For the smaller jar, I use a folders coffee container with a lid.

Spoon, towel, lures and bait are all left in this container. Just snap on the lid and your ready to go home…no muss no fuss.

The few times I used stink bait I had good luck on Pools 5 through 7; however, it is messy so for the past few years I have done just as well on crawlers and cut bait.

Sounds like too much work for me! I’d rather fish for bass than monkey around with tubes, sponges and stinkbait!

Get the hollow tubes that are made from surgical tubing. They keep bait for hours. I still dip them every half hour or so. I had about 80 lbs of channels Friday before last with my bud and his son. J

Actually, I might try something like that. I’ve used poor stinkbait in the past that I had to rebait constantly, but there has to be something good about this stuff Brian is using. Brian will you take me out and bait my hook.

Actually Pug, I was hoping to get some tips from you… a couple ladies that you must have fished with at some point said you were a Master Baiter.

    …maybe I won’t watch.

Are these the same ladies that refused to hold my fishing pole?

Try some Dawn For Dishes and warm water…not only does it take the grease off…but any scum from your hands too…

Would this be a cat tip of the day?

Ok, did this go over my head or are you replying to someone else? If you were replying to me, please don’t explain. I have a feeling I don’t want to know.
