Targeting Fall Flatheads

When do you guys start targeting flats near there wintering holes or do you target them in the same areas as summer? Do you strickly go by water temp or the time of year. I would think that like other fish, they would really start putting a feed bag on and also arrive at these holes well before they stop biting.

Ah yes the “Fall Feed Bag”- Good post, this should get some people talking

In my experience there is a good bite for Flatheads through Sept. Especially if we get some rain here in the next couple weeks and get the flow up before it gets cold. Generally for me it has always been bigger fish I am catching, but I may only catch 1/night. I have had mutiple fish nights in the fall, but not near as many as during spring and early summer. From now until I hang up the cat gear I will concentrate my efforts near and in wintering holes. I think this is the beggining of their transition from summer to fall/winter homes. My gear, presentation and bait all stay the same as spring/summer- Bullheads and big suckers, since I can’t use Sunfish.

That’s my 2 cents on fall flatheads.

Just wait til they are in the holes then star dragging large spoons along the bottom. When you feel resistance, just yank.

Now come one D, we already have a heated thread and we don’t need another one.

I have a feeling many people this year have already been fishing near wintering holes with the water level being down.

I guess it depends on what the definition of “transition time” is..

The cats have moved out of the spawning grounds…so I guess that would mean the start of the transition.

I’ve been focusing on the evening moving water areas…actually targeting channels with my little stink bait test…but we’re fast approaching the wing dam scour hole time of the year as the flats will be holding there on their way to the wintering holes.

Two years ago it was FlatheadWI that pulled in his fall piggie…then last year it was C15 that snuck up on his 50+ brute.

Who will it be this year???

I fish much deeper than everyone else on the average throughout the season.. I dont change my game plan in the fall and fish the same type of general deeper water structures… then again I am usually fishing from 10′-30′ of water 95% of the time.

I dont fish them too much in the late fall, I am too busy shooting at birds or chasing other species of fish on a rare occasion.

Your right Ryan! Unless they are going to grab your spinnerbait by accident. Odds go way up when you FISH FOR CATFISH

I’ll get one on a spinnerbait yet They can be tough to cast with a Big Cat rod, 6500C3, and 80lb Power Pro, though.

Remember the sleeper. Were getting a little ahead of our selves here. We got another good month before we start heading down that path.
