Its been a LONG time coming.. but it actually happened!
I cant remember the last time I made it out for a *normal* night of catfishing. I made it out just in time to get hit by the heavy evening downpour when I was trying to get set up. That lasted all of 10 minutes and it was done. The lines hit the water with cutbait 1st and it was only minutes before the rod was jumping hard. The same action continued most of the evening and eventually slowed down before the storms came in around midnight.
Cut everything was working, bullheads were getting hit with regularity(every 15 minutes?) from both flats and channels. Our local cat pro’s(hanson and Karl) managed to miss, hook and lose, or get broken off on every fish besides one small flat and a channel on the bullheads. I caught around a half dozen channels on the cutbait and missed 3 times as many. I think its been so long that we all had bites with any reglarity that we forgot what to do when we get one!
We set up near a locking area and active storm drains that have always been productive on rain days. The main storm drain only had heavy flow for 10 minutes? which struck me odd with all the rain. There was usual barge traffic using the locks which also cycled the water regularly.
It didnt seem to make a difference what you had on the end of the line, it would get bit before too long.
It was nice to have a *normal* evening of fishing for a change. With the normal weather coming up I only hope the trend continues.. The fish are biting now! That is a good enough reason for me to get out!
