Just got a call from Stick Boy.

He just landed (boat side) a flathead that he says is all of 50 pounds. He’s going to put it in his 50 gal live well and bring it to the resort.

    My question to you is:

    He’s a walleye guy…think it makes 30 pounds?

He’s a walleye guy…think he’s brave enough to get it in the boat?

    He’s a walleye guy…think it’s a channel cat?

He’s a walleye guy…think he’s just trying to get me to go fishing with him?

If in fact he does come back with it…I should have a cell phone pic in about 45 minutes or so.

putting a 45 pound fish in a 50 gallon livewell is a good way to kill a trophy fish. You can’t keep up with the oxygen demand. Might have got away with it this time if the ride was short, but don’t anybody get any ideas that it’s at all wise to do. A flathead will live longer under a wet towel than submerged in water without enough oxygen – not that I’m recommending that either.

On a more positive note though, sweet fish – any details? Depth? Layout? Presentation?

Matt, it was about 15..20 minute boat ride. I held him in the water for less than 5 minutes before he kick butt to the depths. I don’t think the lack of oxygen hurt him as much as two walleye guys stepping on the live well lid trying to get him in there. (J/K)

I’ll let Stick fill in the details of his “cat” trip.

I am not doubting Brian’s claim the fish swam off strong, happy and free. Before stating the following, I’ll have to say that I recommend getting your pictures and weights ASAP, so you can release your fish.

That being said, flatheads are pretty hardy. The oxygen requirements are much lower than the average fish, as I am sure you know. I am sure their general metabolism and physiology allows them to handle more stress. But then I guess it also depends on other factors like where it was hooked and the length of the fight contribute to wether a release is successful. I have a hard time faulting a couple of guys wanting pictures of a monster like that. At least they didn’t tow it behind the boat with a stringer attached to it’s lips!

Or do something even crazier, like eat it!

The fish was realeased just fine. He was in the boat within ten min. didnt fight to much just hard to get him off the bottom with 14ld. line. He was hooked in the front of the mouth so no where near and critical areas. I did club him over the head a few times to settle him down a little then had to stomp on him to get him in the live well but I think he’ll be ok.
Nothing fancy on the story were were walley fishing though. Is this where I get the boot . Just trolling cranks, I thought we got a snag when she started to buck a little. My friend cory faught her for maybe ten min to get her off bottom and that was it not much else to add. In to everets for a few quick pic. ( Ididnt bring a camera ) then off she went. It was easy kinda like those green carp .

Actually, he was gasping for air quite badly..and his condition worsening as the photo’s were being taken.

But a couple of beers and Stick Boy was just about as good as new. Gez he complained a lot about the weight!

Ps I don’t recommend transporting any flat…catch photo and release! The only way to go…but if you want a once in stickboys life time picture…

We also had a discussion about having a camera in the boat at all times. Trouble is…he’s a walleye guy…why would he ever need a camera.

Nice fish Stick and Non Registered Lurker Cory!

    Nice fish!

Dont take the livewell shots to heart.. there was more oxygen in that livewell than their is in the river right now if you had the pump running. As long as the water supply was fresh that fish probably hit the water better than it did fatigued when it came out..

A camera is much easier! Digital scales are cheap too.

Aside from the comments about whether the fish lived is he now a mudcat guy. Bottom line is some of us are mostly CPR anyway so would you rather have a big old Mudcat or a 10 lb. Walleye. Caught three of the latter but never a mudcat as nice as this one.

Anybody notice that when a walleye guy holds a cat for a pic we don’t use no stinking glove. Walleye guys are just too darn tough for that.

Nice fish Stick. Aren’t you glad I talked you into switching aaway from mono for trolling the river?????
