They are tough beasterds! My brother has a theory that lakes with them tend to have larger fish, because the dogfish is an efficient predator at thinning out the younger fish.

My favorite encounter was being on a small wooden walking bridge in this resorts marina and watching a pair nesting in the roots of some cattails. I hooked one of them once, but it flopped off. The point of the hook came back bent! I figured I’d let’em be after that.

Is this one of those ”eat your heart out Briank” type of fish because he hasn’t caught one of them that big yet? Every nice size fish on the end of the line is fun fighting to the boat.
    Thanks, Bill

    Now there’s an untapped nich!

When I lived in Hasting about 15 years ago, I was fishing the cat tails around the Hastings dam (Now that I think about it..they are gone now).
We were pitching dare devils into them. A 7 pound doggie nail it and had a fight that left a mark in my mind.

Two years ago my favorite brother in law caught one on the Vermillion in the spring. I used my brand spanking new digital scale on it…dang thing started floping around knocking the scale out of my hand…and into 10 feet of water…

I’m a little surprised that you didn’t lip ’em Ralph!

Funny you should say that. My dad had never seen one, and he stuck his finger in it’s mouth to feel it’s teeth I can’t believe that the thing didn’t bite him.

OK… theres something funny going on around these parts!

I have lived this long not knowing what a yum dinger is.. I can make it the rest of my life… I wont even comment on the beaver phrase! You guys better keep that kind of talk to PM’s or the cat forum will go downhill in a hurry… on another note, if I ever have a guy coming up to me talking about his yum dinger, or sweet beaver.. that would probably provoke violence!

    Back to the subject here!
I caught a dogfish last weekend on cut sucker on pool 1 well after dark, and another one earlier this year while stocking up my bullhead cooler that had more blue/green color on it than any normal fish color. Spawn phase thing? I personally think dogfish are really cool fish. I think the hatred for them was developed by meat hunters of the past that were frustrated when they learned the fish on the end of their line wouldnt be making the dinner table. its not a food fish, better kill it right?

They are a very agressive fish, they fight like crazy for their size, they look interesting.. they are everything a B@ss is not… that has to be a good thing right?

Anybody that catches a fish and is dissappointed, is not the kind of fisherman I want to know!

A funny thing happened to me this spring when shopping for bass/pike lures. I kept coming to this forum and heard people writing about these lures I had no idea about. That’s when I knew it was over. I used to be on top of that stuff. Yumdingers, Cenkos (I don’t even think I spelled this right), etc. As Truth.com likes to say, watdafxuppwiddat?
