Last evening I took my 4 year old son summer cat fishing for the first time. Did we have a ball. After spoting several alligators and crocidiles (logs floating in water). As well as seeing blackbeard the pirate with tresure chest(man with large beard fishing from shore with cooler). We managed to catch 7 channel cats from the upper Mississippi. The largest being 20″. The cats were prefering cut smelt over shrimp and liver. Most were caught on shallow flats near hole with little current. I am sure if we could have stayed fishing later we would connected with some bigger fish.

It just don’t get any better than that. Congrats Dad on a great outing!
July 18, 2006 at 4:22 pm #461387My fishing buddy likes to talk about things like making a real light saber, and what would he use it for. And hover cars – he’s really convinced that we should be making hover cars. He’s had a blast this summer – the trick is to get in some swimming before boat time, that brings him back every time – it also helps that mosquitos haven’t been as bad lately.
He hasn’t nailed a big one yet this year, last year he hauled in a 22 pounder for a personal best.
July 18, 2006 at 5:51 pm #461417This is my son’s (2 1/2 yrs) first channel Cat (thanks Fisher Dave, Sherry and Tyler!) We had a great time and he could not stop talking about it!
July 18, 2006 at 6:57 pm #461432That’s awesome Marc. My daughter is 13 and would rather take cool pictures than fish. I guess that’s not half bad. I can convince her to go, if I let her take pictures. Plus, if I ever hook a memorable fish, she’ll be there to take the picture. But she probably will insist on some my space angles and facial expressions!
Flathead, I am in awe of your son. In my 1+ year chasing flatheads, I haven’t broken 20#!
Nice Job dads! All I know is when my daughter gets older, I hope she meets a Flatchaser.
Sherry/Dave, I know Tyler is a master channel chaser, but I was wondering if he has ever reeled in a flathead?
There was one year when my daughter was 6-8 when she’d fish with me. I let her cast a spinnerbait on an ultralite and she had a blast catching pike all on her own. What did I do wrong??
July 18, 2006 at 7:14 pm #461435Great photos everyone! Look at those smiles! That’s what fishing is all about if you ask me… the fun!
Marc: Arman is a natural!! It was our pleasure… you guys come fish with us any time!! It was nice meeting the rest of your family last night too!
Mike: Tyler has reeled in plenty a Flathead. He’s just been targeting Channels more this year because they seem to be giving him more action, and he likes that. He’s starting to get big enough to make these kinds of decisions now.
Here is his very first Flathead ever… 7/11/05
And here is his biggest Channel to date… 7/5/05
July 18, 2006 at 8:21 pm #461463Ok, I was just checking. I hadn’t ever seen a picture of him with a flathead and he always seems to be chasing the channels so I was curious. You all are quite the catfishing family!
July 18, 2006 at 8:58 pm #461475Those pictures are fantastic
I love the last one with the father/son/catfish in it. That is one for the big frame.
July 19, 2006 at 3:05 am #461561I just noticed Tyler has the flathead grip down!
<– Better than me who holds them like a bass.July 19, 2006 at 3:21 am #461568Yeah I know, Mike! The funny part was, for the second photo of that fish he put his hand under it and held it sideways!! Just like the big guys.
July 19, 2006 at 5:15 am #461584Where’s the Channel Tyler caught on Daves birthday?
Maybe I should check the birthday Post……July 19, 2006 at 5:24 am #461585Quote:

That setup is actually fisher Dave’s, and the reel is a shimano tekota. I was actually sceptical about that reel at first due to the lever you have to push to engadge the reel, but once I casted it I was like I need to get one! That reel casts so smooth and the drag is solid as a rock.
That definatly will be Arman’s first cattin reel.
