In the spirit of the “is it just me?” thread on the walleye forum, I thought I would announce I had my first multiple flathead day of the year. I picked up three mudcat (that’s what we called ’em back in SE Minnesota) today on Pool 16. The largest was a modest 28″, and the smallest a measly 14″. What irritates me is that the largest was taken on a Firetiger JSR-05 off the front of a wing dam, and the smaller two were taken on crawler harnesses. I thought I had walleye on, until I saw the hit-with-a-shovel head and calf-scour yellow of a flathead! So, I had to clean the mudcat slime off my hands and line after I CR’d them, and hope I caught something on the next pass up the wing dam that would actually look presentable in a photo, and not scare all the neighborhood children with its sheer ugliness. Several nice walleye obliged, so the day was not a total loss.
In all seriousness, I am guessing the catfish spawn is pretty much done down here, so I am thinking of getting out soon and actually trying to catch some flathead…look out, bullheads.
