Upper Croix over the 4th of July weekend

I got out Friday through Monday on the upper Croix, north of the zebra mussel turnaround with my wife. It had been a month since we camped there and the water levels were way down. Because of that we had the river mostly to ourselves. Saw maybe 5 other boats round our section.

I headed out with frozen sucker and no bullies because my bh hotspot only had carp in it. I’ve never had better luck for smallies, catching about 30 on all kinds of lures, but mostly Slurpie Dip Stick Worms (just like a Yum Dinger). I caught quite a few walleyes, though the biggest was only 18 inches. And two cats. One 3 lb channel, and a 48 1/2 lb flat.

Sunday morning, before I caught the flat, I had caught a few small, 10 inch sheepies. I kept them for bait and even showed them to a Fish and Game officer, who said they oughta work. Round 10 at night I had a sheepie rigged through the nose with a 10\0 Joe Bucher sucker rig and hooked into my personal best about 20 minutes later.

I fried one up this weekend (a sheepie, not a 48lb flathead )…excellent! Couldn’t believe it.

I have tried and tried to get fish on sheepies and never had any luck.. a fish like that might make me try again sometime.

Hot Damn Catilac, that is a beauty of a fish. Wish it had been mine

And with a sheepie no less, I guess makes a guy remember to get out there when you can, and use what you have. It just might be that next cast you will the monster.
