Cat Tip of the Day: Brush Anchor

After reading Brian’s post on “Anchors and Catfishing” this seemed like a good time to cat tip the use of a brush anchor. This anchor is a lot lighter than Larry’s 73 lb homemade anchor but I don’t think it will hold you in a midstream Minnesota River current like Larry’s could. This anchor does have its application when fishing those snag infested backwaters and those long stretches of outside bend logjams. It is about as simple as it gets – just attach it to a rope, clip it to a log or snag and snug it off on the anchor cleat or gripper on the front of the boat. You don’t need to drop an anchor into the current in the middle of a logjam, just a quick tie off and start fishing.

I use the one shown on almost every cat trip. I found this particular brush anchor at Target of all places. It cost all of about $2 at the time and I grabbed up the 3 they had hanging on the peg in the Sporting Goods Department. I have never seen them restocked since – that was a couple of years ago.

Catfish Connection has a similar product that looks much more heavy duty than the one I use. It is about $9 and is called a “Brush Gripper”. I plan on ordering one next time I place a cat order.

If you find one of these, jump on it. It is worth the price for ease of use and can save you from losing a more expensive anchor in a logjam.

Nice idea C15, here I’ve been tying direct, which works good till its time to go. Trying to untie can be a $*%&@ sometimes.
    thanks

The brush anchor is the way to go if there’s any wood sticking out…as that’s the type of area anchors vanish in…speaking from experiance…

Good idea on the brush anchor. I am well known for tying off to logs, roots, tossing anchors on shore, etc…

The best place to use these are on tall, dirt cut banks with tree roots sticking out.. the banks that are at least 10′ work best when there is a back-current pushing your bow back into the bank… You hook up to the tree roots

In all reality.. It makes the guy in the front of the boat pretty nervous looking strait up at a 12′ cut bank when there are banks falling in all over the river.. Right Hanson?
