If I am fishing a good sized 15 foot hole that slopes down from 7 feet deep and is boardered by a cut bank that is about 8-10 feet deep. Where do I put the bait. O yea the deepest part of the hole is full of logs. Do I throw out next to the cut bank, or near the logs. Or on the top edge of the hole. We have cuaght some on the cut and some up the slope of the hole. Also how long do you give a spot with no fish before you go. Because one night it took us over an hour to get a bite but then we cuaght two back to back.

    thaks kevin

Are you talking channels or flatheads. Without knowing that, it’s hard to give good answers. That being said, it does sound like a good spot. I am assuming with a cut bank that there’s a good current going through there?

flatheads, and there is less current than you’d think for a cut bank

Well i can tell you that we fished a spot similar to that on Saturday and we got a FLathead near the cut bank when the 3 other lines were trying to coax something out of the wood at the back of the hole. The cast couldn’t have been 2-4′ from shore and in about 4′ of water.

There are 2 different spots I would start at if I interpeted it correctly.

The head of the hole(upstream side) and toss my lines back to the submerged wood, or fish the outside edge(assuming its a bend in the river) of the hole closer to the cutbank. Your later statement saying there wasnt much current next to the cutbank makes it sound like there is an eddy on the cutbank side.. if that is the case.. fish that current seam between the hole(and woodpile) where the current seam is on the cutbank side.

If this is a bend in the river, the inside of the turn where the shallower area(sand bar) can also be very productive. The fish will come out of that hole and feed in the shallows. Current seams are probably the key feature you want to look for.
