Got out on the river with my Dad again for an evening of cattin’. We didn’t have all the time in the world so I set us up on the same spot I was Sunday. Only difference is we were in the boat. Set up in 17 fow right on a current seem with a good snag just down stream. 1 rod with a bullie and 1 with cut sucker. Dad had 1 good run in the first 20 mins and that was it for the next 45 mins.

We pulled anchor and slipped down stream just behind the snag. Put 2 bullies out this time and I connected with a chunky 24″ flattie. Weird thing about this fish is I picked up the rod to reposition my bait and there was slack line, which I had not noticed I usually pick up these things. I am always sooo concentrated on what my line is doing. Anyway she must of had me in some wood because she felt good. I looked at Dad and said it’s a good one. 2 seconds later she freed(sp) herself and came right to the boat.

Went to 2 of my regular spots and there were boats on both of them Ended the night at 9:30 with 2 runs and 1 24″ Flathead. Thanks to my Dad for another great eveningon the water.

Oh yea sorry about the truck Dad! It’s got character now

Thanks for the report. Its not always about the catchin that makes it a great outting but more about the quality of time spent with a loved one or good buddy that matters most. Fishing for cats isn’t a quanity sport anyway as you usually catch maybe a few and not alot like panfish or something. Glad to see you and your Dad getting out together.
    Thanks, Bill

It was slow for us, too. Mr. Special did manage a 5 pound channel that somehow managed to swallow a very fat bullhead, but that was it for us.

I wouldn’t pass up a chance to fish with my Dad for anything. He is the one responsible for my addiction Without him I would not be half the fisherman I am today. Absolutely hands down the best fishing partner ever adn he makes one heck of a net man J/K Dad I’ve got my butt hadned to me on a golden platter by you too.

By the way Dad if you are reading this reply to it. I know you ain’t doing a darn thing at work

We had a long night too…for fish.

Three guys all around 7 lbs. and one missed fish. The birthday boy I had along thought it was a little nippy on the ride home as he was wearing shorts…brr!

    Gocatfish?? Your post above???

I never had a chance to take my favorite fishing partner catten. He said he disowned me when I started showing him pics of cats…but he never missed an opportunity to show them to his friends. I know if I could have taken him out just once…he would have talked about it for a year!

The good thing is that he visits me on the water everytime I’m out…at least once.

Shorts on the river!? Not in a million years. Too many bugs and it does get chilly on the ride home.

It’s too bad you never got the chance to share cattin’ with you father. I can’t wait for my Dad to finally get a flattie. If I can ask- Why did he disown you after you began cattin’?

He never got over the MN DNR planting cats in the lakes around Hutchinson…and he didn’t believe me that “those damn bottom feeding trash fish” were the reason his fly fishing for blue gills became so much better!

He was a kidder like me…and love to put smiles on peoples faces…he really didn’t disown me…although after he was done showing my picts to his freinds, he would say…”I don’t know what happened…I tried raising him right”

If he would have seen me last week in the water with his waders…and his favorite bluegill catch net…fishing for bullheads to use as bait…well, I think he would have said…”That’s bad enough to make a preacher swear!”.

The other one liner…that he would use on me was “I teach you everything I know…and nothing you know yet”.

Sounds alot like my Dad. Always on my butt about something

The first time my Dad saw what I had done to my Musky rigs he about had a heart attack. “Why would you ever need 80lb line and 5 oz sinkers for catfish? Are you planning on pulling someone out of the ditch?” Shortly after that I brought him a reel that a fish had destroyed, and some hooks that had been straightened out by fish. It was a Abu 6600 c3, it stripped the gears out and somehow broke the piece that engages the spool. So my reel was in free spool and this fish is screaming down stream. Chased it for a bit trying to figure out what to do and finally cut the line. I still have the reel as a reminder of what these wonderful fish are capable of.

    Are you 2 done yet?

My dad was more of a golfer, but that never stopped him from taking me fishing whenever he could. I wish I had the chance to pay him back by taking him out a few times, but the lord had other plans. But like Brian said, fishing is one of those moments when you quiet your life down enough to realize they are still around!

Tony, did you say you you can’t wait for your dad to catch his first flat? I thought you guys caught one? You mean you didn’t let your dad catch it? I suppose that’d be kind of disrespectful to hand pa your rod and say, “Go ahead and reel him in”!

Glad to hear you 2 were able to get out on the water.

AND WHAT”S WRONG WITH SHORTS AND FLIP_FLOPS WHILE YOU ARE FISHING!!!!

Nothing wrong with it when you can order a pizza and have it delivered while you’re fishing

He never handed me a rod with a fish attached to the other end, so…………….

Nothing wrong with shorts- You wouldn’t want to see me in shorts though. Can you say sasquatch(sp)
