Very nice artical!
In checking a little closer…they hold 3 state records!
I’m thinking they have to be related Dirk!
No, no, no, you know how authors go by pen names? That’s me that caught those…….don’t wake me.
So they caught 47 and 48 inch fish with 36 and 40 lb test?
How can those be records?
P.S. Check out the BADA$$ that submitted a 40 inch fish in the 70lb line class.
Number one I don’t think those are “state” records they are some sort of catch and release line class world records, check out the different states. Number two, by doing a little digging to see what’s doable and buying yourself some certified line, something that breaks real close to what it’s rated at…you too could be a record holder, for what it’s worth??? i.e. a 40 inch fish on 70 lb. line….

If memory serves, Berkley was making it worth a bundle in the recent past, and maybe these records are a reflection of that – most of them are late 90’s/early 00’s.
What gets me is the flyfishing record for flathead… I’m still trying to picture that one.
I’m pretty sure I’ve asked Dirk about the Wassink brothers before and they’re no relation. They fish mostly out of Iowa I believe, although as the records show, they make their way north from time to time. I’ve seen a good article on their aggressive “run & gun” tactics – looks like fun if you have tons of tackle and energy (mainly daytime flathead guys).
Happy Hunting,
Matt

I remember that too.

The image I get in my head is some guy casting a bullhead back and forth!
Actually, the article that Brian originally referred to talks mainly about how they’ll stay in the boat for the entire weekend and that they do best from 3-6 am.
Oh, and how’s this for a flyrod flattie? It’s a picture I saw on another forum earlier this spring. It was taken in a pond in the Mankato area.
Cool!
But that would hurt…without a fighting butt!
Thanks for the info JC and FHW…Going back to their website…it’s listed as
Quote:
Iowa Game & Fish
3 Line-Class World Records
Guess when it came up as Iowa Game and Fish…State stuck in my mind.
I couldn’t find it..but I thought I read somewhere in back posts that these fellas were Dirks brothers???
I get this feeling he’s neither going to confirm or deny this.
