Thank you, Brian, for the welcome.

As for the hooking, I usually try to avoid the spine, but in case I do hit it I keep going. The BH will still kick for a while, and if it does slow down another is only a minnow net away.

The hook riding towards the rear has a better chance, IMO, of the bullhead coming loose and getting out of the way of the hook to do its job, find meat. Imagine what a bullhead endures when a rather hungry flathead finds him suitable for lunch…. Just my observations, but like I said, after switching to this way I seem to get better hook-ups.

And Willmar is what I call home. Most of my flathead missions are around Granite Falls.

This doesn’t prove anything, but I caught the smallest flat last night on the biggest bully.

Also while wading in the water and catching my bait, I saw this years generation of bullheads. That’s something I hadn’t seen since I was young. A cloud of what looked like thousands of pea sized bullhead fry. Isn’t there usually an adult that watches over them?

I also saw this year’s crop of bullies in a pond near my place the other day. I watched them for a good 45 minutes. Pretty cool.

    Good one Marc!

I watched a smaller Northern “spear” it’self into a group of bullies like the once… It charged into the mass 5 times before slowly moving off to deeper water…

I didn’t even know game fish ate bullies!

When I was a wee lad, my brother’s father-in-law took me to a lake near Elk River were they were catching bass left and right from shore. They were all about 1.5 – 2lbs and had very gorged stomaches. Every cast you got one. I got so bored I started using lures I didn’t have as much confidence in and I still got one darn near every cast.

Even back then, I was not a guy who had much of a desire to keep fish, but the guy who took me kept some and my brother wanted some. When we opened up the stomachs when we got home, we realized what was going on. They were schooling and had hearded a bunch of 1 inch bulllheads on that shore!

From all we have seen, bullheads apparently are a favorite to all fish! I still haven’t tried them for any other species, but I found a creek by my house with some smaller ones that would be perfect for other gamefish. I need to give it a shot some day I fish for those “other” fish.

Thanks for resizing that, Brian. I thought I had it small enough, and once I realized that it was that big, I was ready for the sack.
