After a windy, raging current filled afternoon on the Minnesota river, hanson and I decided to change locations and hit a spot in the *back yard*.

We hit pool 1 of the Mississippi by 8:00. The runs started happening immediately.. 3 runs later, and one hard chomp(all within 25 minutes).. hanson couldnt manage to hook a fish, but he decided his bullhead was good for another couple runs since it lasted that long.. he was wrong!

Soon after, we were joined by pier bridge, black sportman and his significant other. The runs kept happening at a very steady pace and from every direction.

Manny got his ice breaker of the year, Gary got a couple if I remember right. I managed to set the hook back into my bullhead once, loose a bullhead, and managed to perfectly rehook another bullhead inside a fish’s mouth and rip it out of there to save it from certain death(being consumed).

Manny did manage to lose a big fish in the end.. I guess he wont doubt when I tell him thats a bite again!

The weather was great, the conversation was good, the runs were plentyful, the fish were… small!

But it was a good time. Its nice to hear the tune of so many clickers in an evening!

Good to hear, but I thought you’d have heard enough clicker on Thursday from Bob’s reel How’d your new purchase work out?

It worked great to retrieve scraped up bullheads and empty hooks!

Tonight will be a different story.

We ended up with some shiny skinned bullheads too…more than our fair share….

Are you fishing out of Mill Ruins Park, below the second lock, or in a boat???? Just curious, I work downtown and wouldn’t mind sneaking out after work some night.

I was praying for just a 5 pounder last night, as I think I have almost forgotten how it feels to hold one. I had the clicker go slowly 3 times, but I assumed after not feeling anything when I reeled up the slack, it was just the current pulling my slack line. Reading this report makes me wonder. They did look look sandpapered, but I thought that was just from transporting them.

I probably should have given the spot more time, but since my daughter was with, I was hoping she’d get some fast action on the leech or crawler. No luck there so we moved to a spot I fished early in the year. Wow, with the water down about 4 ft since I fished it, I realize the rip rap I was fishing as a very deep hole with very large boulders that were very effective at pinching my bullheads off when I reeled in. I guess I can take that spot off my list now, or at least when the water is up I will know how to fish it.

Shorefishing for flatheads can be a chore when you don’t catch any. My back is killing me today from lugging a cooler of bullheads around. Had I caught just one tike, it would have been worth it. Of course, it was worth it fishing with my daughter. I wish I could have caught one for her. I think a 10lb+ one would have made her day.

Dan, I’ve fished from Mill Ruins a few times in the past couple of weeks. It can be slow, but there are flatheads in there. I’ve lost two recently and had a couple of more runs.
