My night catfishing with Briank – video clips

I had the chance to get in the boat with our cat-crazy IDA staffer Brian Klawitter this past wednesday evening. Our goal was to catch a big flathead or two… and try and eat as FEW river bugs as possible in the process.

The bugs were out in swarms that made some of our still photos look like they were taken in a snow storm. At one point I had to stop filming a little video clip that was in progress because I was choking on a winged critter that just wouldn’t give up the fight and slide the rest of the way down my throat.

    GACK! <img src=”http://www.in-depthangling.com/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif&#8221; alt=”” />

But back to the fishing. With some of the questions recently about rigging and hooking bullheads, we decided to shoot a quick rigging tutorial to share here.

Please forgive the background noise. We were parked near the dam waiting for a lock-thru and the rushing water drowned out Brian’s voice in a couple spots. I figure its OK since most of us rarely pay attention to Briank anyway… lol

Actually, I’m just kidding about that one. There’s some good info in the following clip. File size is less than 7 Mb. Turn up the volume once you have it downloaded.

    Briank talks rigging for flatheads

So did his rigging and hooking method work?

I’d have to say so! Our run to hook-up ratio was 100% for the evening!

(Before you get too impressed… we had one run but Brian made it count. <img src=”http://cdn.in-depthoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/bbu_images/graemlins/grin.gif&#8221; alt=”” />)

Here’s Brian with a 26# flathead that hit the second rod in the water at a new spot. This flattie must have been hungry as the bullies had hardly hit the bottom and Brian was still rigging rod #3 when the clicker sounded off.

We filmed the fight from hookset to landing net with my good camera and followed up with a sony P-17 that shoots mpeg clips. I’ll see what I can do about getting that higher quality footage edited to share here some time down the road.

The file size on this one is 9 Mb. It’s a big file if you’re on high speed. If you’re on dial-up, click download and go take a nap… lol <img src=”http://cdn.in-depthoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/bbu_images/graemlins/doah.gif&#8221; alt=”” />

Briank sticks and lands a 26 Lb flattie!

Thanks for having me out Brian. Let me know what you’d like to get more aquainted with some flattie spots down in my neck of the woods on Pool 4. <img src=”http://cdn.in-depthoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/bbu_images/graemlins/waytogo.gif&#8221; alt=”” />

Brian – How many takes were there to make that look so professional?

Maybe you should teach a class at the local learning annex?

    Don’t be feeding his ego!

Maybe you should talk to some local stations and start your own show for those cold Winter Saturday mornings! Not that we need to turn any more people onto God’s greatest fish!

Great Job, James and Brian. What a great tool – worked pretty good even in the dark. I was hoping to see James hoisting a hog – you have to go out again.

I think we had a miss understanding James…the goal was to eat as FEW bugs as possible???

I hope the full lenght video turns out…I would have bet each of the 25 pennys I had in my pocket that she was going to be mid 30’s. There was some current there, but when I set the hook…she hit the afterburners pulling out drag from the cinched down 7000.

When it came to the boat…my custom St Croix from Hooked on Fishing had quite a work out!

Thanks for inviting me you Mr. Holst. It was a good time…and next time I’ll try to avoid the bigger swarms…

Ooohh, now is a good time to ask a silly question… (but was afraid to ask)…how do you weigh a big flathead?? Same question with a channel cat??

I only know this because Brian and Fisher Dave have showed me. The inside of the flats mouth is like a suitcase handle. You grab them there and you can weigh them there. Channels I’m not so sure, except I know you don’t want to use the same method.

Like DD said…for smaller fish. If the cat is still hot (struggling) or the larger one’s…I’ll leave them in the net and subtract 3.5 lbs for the net.

Much easier on me and the fish.

Brian, do you have your own camcorder or was that one your guest brought with them? I would suggest anyone who is going out catfishing to make sime short clips like Brian did. Maybe we can share techniques with each other by video.

Hopefully we will get into some biggies Brian so I can catch them on my new dvd camcorder.

That video was taken by Mr. James Holst, the owner of this site.

It’s hard…but not impossable to get good video in the dark. But to your point, I’m always interested in seeing a flatty come to the boat!

My camera has night vision on it. So that may come in useful! After downloading it to my computer I can send you a dvd burn of it for your records. Then maybe with enough footage we can make “a best of” dvd that you can sell on your website and distribute to potential customers.

It is hard… but with the adjustable level light box I’m looking at buying it will be a breeze. Having one of these light boxes will make all sorts of night footage possible… while retaining incredible color and image clarity.

We’re just getting started and I’m having WAY too much fun with this video thing to not see how far we can take it or how good we can get it to turn out.

I just got done ordering an ajustable infared light level box for my sony mini dvd handycam. It cost about 69$ but I guess makes a big difference in long distance picture quality, it goes out to 100 feet. I cant wait to try it out.

Have you taken any other video of flathead fishing? How hard is it to post on this site? Those little clips of Brian are really good and can be a big help to newbies.
