Now that I have my outboard running good again I finally made it out cattin’
I made a run to the nursery for bait and the gills were slamming. It didn’t take long and I had a dozen gills from 6-8 inches.

I set up on an eddy in 5FOW with 20FOW just feet away. The eddy is caused by a good current being pinched off by the tip of an island. There is not much for timber in the area but plenty of good sized rock.

My first fish pictured here came at 8:00pm. She must be an early riser. There was no hesitation on her part, slam and hooked I was happy to catch and release my first kitten of the year. She was just at 9 pounds.
After some time without a hit I was thinking that would be it for the night. Time to go home and get ready for work Just then I was slammed again. This fish was at 22 pounds and some change. I had 2 other slams, good enough to crush a gill but not enough that they held on for a hook set.

I can’t complain for my first few hours out cattin’ this year

Good luck fishing and good night

    Bret,

You make a good point on no wood sometimes being a good spot. If I can find boulders and current, that will often hold fish. They park right behind them and use them as a current shield.

Nice cats. I need to start targeting flatties rather than just channel cats. Any tips for a new flathead hunter???

Tip #1…try to relax while waiting for the flash on the camera to go off in the dark

If you search around in this forum you will find a ton of very good info.

I hear there’s a few out there. Protect them from snakes!
