Last night I had the pleasure of guiding Mr. DeepLake (Kevin) and his partner ShallowRiver (sorry Shauna, I just made that up! )

We had one of the most unusual nights I’ve had on the river.

We fished spot A until after dark with a number of runs and fish boated prior to sundown.

Pictured above is Shauna with her first flat ever…might have weighed in at 3 pounds. I was hoping we would do better than that!

Shauna had her fair share of missed runs for the night but Kevin seemed to connect with most every fish!

After landing a number of smaller fish, we moved to spot b..which is a fairly deep divit in the bank…just out of the main channel with pleanty of current. It’s on a bit of a corner so it’s hard to see up or down stream.

We noticed a barge was coming. Continued fishing….

When the front end of the barge appeared..I noticed it was pretty darn close to us and shined the spot light on it…It became closer! He must have been empty becase the barges were high out of the water…kinda made me feel like an ant next to a whale.

It became appearent that this barge was pulling up on “shore”, out of the channel to wait for another barge heading down stream. The scary part was that it just about completely blocked our exit and wasn’t much over 100 FEET away!

Once the downstream barge passed, this barge started to move out to deeper water…but crashed into a bunch of trees/snags first…which made me pay A LOT OF ATTENTION!
I started a call to them via VHF Marine radio, but I heard a fella talking to us from the front of the barge.

“Whatcha catchen” he hollard in a southern accent….that’s when I notice they had spinning rods and where fishing off the side of the barge! A guy just can’t fish alone anymore!

He said “I bet you (you know) a brick when we pulled up?” I don’t know about Shauna and Kevin, they seemed to handle it well…but I unloaded three of my own bricks back at the launch!

They left and we contiued fishing…

Here’s a couple more pict from last night. Water temp dropped to 68 degrees. No BIG fish, with 17 as our largest…but personal bests for both in the boat.

If my count was right…14 runs with 7 fish boated.

I’m glad the timing worked out for you two.

It was a great night to be on the water…and Shauna? I didn’t order the fog…to give it that “ghostly” appearence!

    Thanks again Kevin..for that little…gift!

Awesome night, gotta get out with you.

Last year on the Red a barge came through above Selkirk towards the lake. No biggy, I was well out of his way and a few other boats were too – all on anchor. Plenty of room and we were on the shallow edge – NOT in the channel at all.

Barge starts booming a horn, loudspeakers start yelling at all of us to leave or he’ll call the Authorities. Guy is on deck calling us everything in the book. The US guys all move and the Canucks pretty much stuck to their spots and stayed on anchor. Barge NEVER came close to us, Canucks said the guy is just a pain and likes to toot his horn – literally.

No clue, but I wasn’t going to argue with a barge.

    Very nice cats

I bet all three of you had the wide eyed look. You should have started up the motor and played a game of chicken with the bardge. I heard that Cat fishing boats have the right of way

they must have gotten a good deal on that barge, because I’d think you could buy a better, smaller boat to troll from!

    Jack, please…no personal attacks…

You’re right Pug…but as slow and well controled as it was…the trolling motor they were using was well worth any cost…

…must have been using one of those big MinnKota’s!

    Just as an FYI…

At no time were we in any danger…and I wanted to keep it that way!

Thoughts were running through my head as to what to do if for some ridiculas reason the barge pivited on it’s front end and came closer…like cutting the anchor rope and jumping on shore…

Just dumb luck that the Cpt figured he would stop right next to us.

    PS…Alway wear your PFD!

Wow! Sounds like me shore fishing Blackdog!

A couple beers run through you, and all of a sudden barge guys want to shine you for 10 minutes and watch you dance!
