A week and half ago we started fishing out usuall (July) spots and olny got some small fish to show for it so I made a few adjustments and the fish told us quick that it was the right move! On another not I also learned quick that my scale is broke So I have to add that to the list along with a new net!

38″ and the fattest one I have ever seen. I dont know how this thing could have fit anything else in its belly!

This is the bullhead slayer with here biggest flat to date!
38″ I guessed 27 lbs with the belly on this boy!

I couldnt let here have the glory for to long so went out solo friday night and landed this bigun
42 inches and guessed the low to mid 30’s

These fish came from p2 and p3. From what I see the fish have still been using the deep water pretty frequent for there daylight haunts. I scouted out a few funnels leaving these areas thru high water just to watch all the wood get washed away but a few had rock at the head of the hole and thats what I have been looking for. At the toe of the rocks a scour is built witch means Kitty Highway!!! Another area is a eroted bank between two deep wingie scours and they have been crusing these areas as well with a meal on there minds.

You cant really see it in the picture but this one had some good sign of the spawn being on! The top and bottom of the tail was worn down to red and there was some good rubs on the back as well.

All these fish were in 8-12 FOW with moderate flow either in front or back of some deep water but the key was to find there highway of travel. All the fish hit by the watch 9:30-9:40. I looked at my girlfriend at 9:18 last night and said 10 minutes 12 minutes later we were taking the picture One of the other guys did get a nice mid 20s fish later at camp on CUT While we were out in the boat yet. I will try and get a picture. The rest hit bullies.

Heres a walleye from last weekend 28 1/2 inches. Sorry for the bad picture but the other one shows a little too much backround caught from shore while we were grilling up some burgers! She hammered the bullie!!!!

Great fish. My advice to you…get a good scale. I have had fat prespawn 38″ fish push well into the thirties, you’ll be surprised.

Thanks for the report. You have eliminated some for water for me. As a guy who can’t get out as much as he wants and fishes from shore, that is a big help. I got a couple of areas in mind and a couple I know to avoid.

Jet, I wish I would have had a scale. Monicas fish was HEAVY. I felt aroud the stomach and you could feel a couple fish along with my bullhead. One I am sure was a white bass The big fish I caught was 42 inches. I didnt get a girth but it was your standard mudcat! I would like to see one of them scales that show a length= ?weight breakdown on flats.

So what did she say Brian?? A couple years ago I had Monica hold up a 40+. It was the 1st flat she held and I was sorta joking when I asked her to hold it. Ever since I have not had to ask her. Snakes are a different story

I have a new scale that goes up to 65 lbs now. I hope I can bottom that one out! I checked the calculator and these fish all were heavier than what I thought. Monica wasnt too worried about it…. She said size dosnt matter

Of course I advocate bringing a scale at all times, but if you don’t I have a calculator button on my website. You wouldn’t believe how much work it was to put there – I tabulated data from nearly a thousand cats and came up with a formula, which I then had to figure out how to use in Javascript. Took days (and many failed attempts) just to make the button. If you hit it, it asks you for length to the nearest inch, then it will crank out a weight estimate.

*a caution: the majority of the data come from southern states and the weight per length tends to be higher than you see around here. This time of year you might find fatty’s that hold up to the estimate, but generally the larger they get, the more this formula will overestimate them. For instance, my buddy’s 47 pounder was over 48 inches, which by my formula makes it a 58 pounder. It’s just extremely difficult to get the high range right due to low sample size! I set up a data gathering form on the site to address that, but I still have few actual samples of 40+ fish in the formula.

Thanks for pointing that out Matt. I’ve used your calculator a number of times.

So what your saying is that you need more lenght measurements on fish above 30 lbs?
If so, can we just post them in this forum…or would you prefer a PM??

Brian, you also have to flip the tape over. Using the metric system on an inch based is cheating!

I am pretty lippy for a guy who only has one flathead to his name this year, aren’t I!

Thanks Matt! I checked out your website Pretty cool. As you all know too these guys can differ 5-10lbs + with what they have been chowing on. We had quite a few high thirty in fish last year and seen weights from 20-30 lbs with olny a inch or two difference. The one monica caught was just as deep as it was wide I olny have seen that with one other fish. It was fat and heavy….. Wish I had the scale

Dave thanks for the kind words. She usually makes it out in the boat 2-3 times a week with me and some how ends up with the hot stick most days
