Deal? Or NO Deal?

I was going to title this “Favorite Wife has Coronary”, but didn’t think that would be too nice…

Since last year with the favorite wife had a Northern Water Snake park his butt right beside her (in the water), she’s been a little fidgety about going catten. I did get her out one more time last year…but the closer our boat came to the “area” the faster her knees were moving up and down…..

I really wanted to take her out tonight and working on her for two days, she came up with this compromise.

    1) If we saw a snake, we would leave immediately. This wasn’t a problem since I canceled our trip last year when she saw one…RIGHT AT THE GOLDEN HOUR! So non issue. Besides, I’ve only seen two or three snakes over a few years of fishing.

    2) If the bats flew too close to her, we had to leave.

    3) I couldn’t get mad about leaving even if it was prime time.

    Deal! I said.

Grabbed something to eat and down to Prescott we went…happy family. We took the scenic tour as we were plenty early. I checked out a couple holes that looked good before, but now with the dropping water…well, I couldn’t get to them.

That reminds me, I watched a number of boaters running on the “inside” of the channel marker buoys today. Those wing dams are getting close to the surface…so if your new to boating on the river and don’t know what a wing dam is or what the red nuns and green cans are…you better ask someone before it gets expensive…or worse!

We pull up to our first spot and as I’m dropping the anchor…my wife is behind me…I though I was going in with the anchor! She said in a voice that only a poltergeist could make…There’s a S N A K E!!!!! I asked her very nicely to sit down before she pushes me over…well she couldn’t sit…in fact the way she was carrying on I thought she was going to have to wear my rain pants home!

Yup! Sure nuff, there in some tanglewood slithered about a 5 footer. We must have scared him as he was heading to the water….it was about 30 feet away. I said out loud…”I can’t believe this!” and up with the anchor and back into the main channel we went…

Now my favorite wife sez…I’ll just take the truck home and I’ll pick you up when your done…this is why she is my favorite wife!

So back to the launch, gave favorite wife a soda and a kiss and off fishing I am. End of story right? Wrong!

Done fishing, I met wife at the dock and she backs the trailer in the water and I load the boat. Quick, easy and no trouble. I walked her out to the end of the dock to look at all the minnows and back. She walked with me as I made the “once around” the boat to ensure it was road ready. As we get back to her side of the truck…she’s looking at something at the waters edge between the two docks…I said in disbelief “man, that looks like a snake”. The words didn’t leave my lips and she was in that truck faster than I’ve seen her move in years. Yup…snake number two of the night…..

On the drive home I was telling her that she must have walked within a few feet of it…to which she replied with silver dollar eyes…”I don’t want to talk about it”. As I glanced over…she had goose bumps the size of grapefruit. I think she’s done for a while.

Great Story, I don’t like them either, but I couldn’t stop reading your story. But, in all seriousness, were the fish biting?

    …the rest of the story.

On the way taking not so favorite wife back to the landing…I realized I didn’t have enough gas to make it back down again safely…SOOO loaded the boat, went the 6 blocks to the gas station and re launched the boat…

I would have paid the $3.69 a gallon for on the water gas…but they were closed.

I high tailed it back to where the first snake was and set up. In about 15 minutes I had a chuncky 10 lber. I lost about 10 hooks and half as many sinkers…with one more run to show for it.

<sigh> ‘spose to be lightening in the air tonight…so I’m taking the night off.

…think I’ll go make her breakfast

Now that was a good laugh, thanks Brian

I can’t even get my wife to think about going on the river in the dark. The one time I did well, to keep it short, NO FUN

No fair planting snakes on the river just so you can go fishing with the guys, Brian.

Maybe stick to daytime catin and away from pool 3 since the combination of pool 3 and nights scare her. Time for you two to do some pool 4 catin and learn some new territory together. Could even be romantic.
    Thanks, Bill

The biggest preditor I have seen this year was a beaver parked below my power pro reaching up to grab it, then I saw the mouth opening.. it was going to chew my line.

No bats out last night, Tylers game boy(screen light) found him a mosquito or 2. You might want to consider taking her out for some urban shore fishing soon!

It sounds like, to keep the beavers away, just make sure there is a snake around
