One Big Flathead

I sent the story of this big cat to Briank as he seems to be the expert on this topic and he asked that I share it with everyone so here goes. Last spring a buddy and I were walleye fishing on P4 near where the Cannon dumps in to to Miss. We were using a jig and minnow combination when he gets what we both think is a snag. He asks me to start the big motor up to get above the snag and get it out. Just as I am about to start it he says hang on it’s moving. It slowly starts making its way across the main channel and then down river. We think for sure he has a sturgeon on and he wants to cut the line as he had to be to work shortly. I tell him no deal, I want to see whatever this thing is. After following it down river for about an hour and forty five minutes he gets it off the bottom a couple of times, but nowhere close to the surface for me to net(we always have the salmon net in the boat and now I know why). About fifteen minutes later we are in the main channel about 100 yards down stream from where the back channel splits off and the hog surfaces and I get her in the net. Not wanting to break the net in half a carefully hoist the monster in to the boat. It is the biggest fish I have ever seen caught, a gigantic flathead. Of course we have no camera in the boat so we make a few phone calls and get someone to meet us at the launch in the back channel to snap a few pictures and get some measurements. I just moved and am trying to locate the pictures to send to Briank to post for me. There were about 6 boats that had followed us down river during this fight along with one guy that followed us for about 10 minutes and then told us we had a log and were wasting our time. Right on man. We had a scale in the boat that went to 50 lbs. and it bottomed that out. We took measurements and it was 49.5 inches long with a 36 inch girth. After a few quick pictures and measurements we let her go to fight another day. As we let her go my buddy says he hopes that someone else one day has the fortune of fightning that hog again. I called the dnr the next day to get estimates and they said most likely it was between 55 to 60 pounds. I think my favorite part of the story though is that he was about an hour late for work. When he called in and told them he was going to be late they asked why and he said he was fighting the biggest fish he had ever hooked. What could they say at that point.

Skineboy…It’s great to start out the story with a joke!

Seriously, this is one of the draws for me to flatheads. The look on a first timers face when landing even a 15 lbser is priceless.

…and catching a fish that size will be the topic of conversation when the big fish storys come up over your and your freinds entire life time!

    Thanks for sharing!

I will find them and get them posted. As I said I recently moved and the house is still being unpacked at this point. We aren’t holding the fish in any of the pictures as neither of us had one clue how to properly handle the fish without hurting it. I will look tonight. I know they are in one of two spots.

I’m not going to lie, that is by far the ugliest fish I have ever seen. I could have easily fit my head in it’s mouth. Anything that has the potential to swallow me whole scares me. After catching this fish we got talking about noodling. I’m sorry but if this thing got a hold of just about anyone trying to noodle it, they would have lost. Not a doubt in my mind.

Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder

I don’t know if I’d call them a beautiful fish, but I think that they are one of the coolest looking fish. They just intrigue me!

I know all of you cat guys have been talking about how the flats should start biting soon. We caught this fish when the eyes were stacked up at the dam for the spawn. Was this just a fluke fish, or would they normally bite that early in the year? After seeing this beast Ralph, I am intrigued too. How big do they get? To me this fish was a giant, but was it really a giant as flatheads go?

You can always tell when someone got into a big cat in the states that allow noodling…by the size of the feet sticking out of the water.

Once you get up close and personal with these creatures…they become rather beautiful…why else would many a true catfisher kiss them???

OK, BrianK that is just sick and wrong. I can’t believe you would kiss one of those thngs. Not a chance I would have kissed that thing for fear that it would have eaten me. I’m pretty sure the fathead snack it got didn’t fill it up.

Eric, you or Ashley know him??

70 lbs is the MN state record. We’re on the north end of their range so they to get bigger further south. There are reports of 100 lbs flats from the 1900’s by netters.

The biggest reason…(In my mind) that the state record hasn’t been broken is that folks that luck into a record…have someone near by that tells them “it’s just a log”!!!

You were one of the lucky ones that actually got to see the fish..most break off by giving up or bad knots, snag break offs ect.

I’m betting that fish hardly new it was hooked.

I can’t believe the line didn’t break. He just kept constant pressure on it and finally it came off the bottom a few times and then he hapened to get it on top of the water once. We had talked about sending the line in to Stren along with the story, but I don’t think that ever happened. I have never seen line stretch that much and not break. There were a million different ways we could have lost this fish and for some reason we got lucky and landded it.

Ashley worked with him at the BEERSTUBE. I remeber the day he caught it. I saw Pics that same day, it was a big fish. If I remember, it took you guys all the way down the river.

I don’t care what anyone says. I’ve been posting around here that they are a beautiful fish. Before the jokes role in, I do have a girlfriend. And no, she doesn’t have fins and gills either.

Has, I haven’t seen her lately, have you guys been fishing a lot this year? Yep, it took us from the Cannon all the way down past where the back channel splits off. I thought we were going to end up down by Alma before we landed it.
