I ended up with an open seat last night. On a moments notice Chappy meet me at the landing. Although he’s hooked into a 30+ flat before fishing wallabe’s, last night was going to be his first time targeting them.

We ran to a spot on P3 that should be turning on any day and tried to get four lines out…but couldn’t do it.

While I was working on the third line the clicker was making a goofy noise. I told Chapster to grab the rod and IF he could feel a fish and not just the bullhead…set the hook home. He did a perfect job. As the fish was coming to the boat I said man, that must be a little one…

Nope…wasn’t a flat at all…still being pestered by those bullhead stealing walleyes!

Chappy boated the nice 27 inch fish…above…which we released.

I thought we were gitting bit a little early for flats…Being Chappy is a walleye type of guy…he was getting a little giddy when he realize it was one of those green things…and it was nice to have him along ’cause I hate touching them…gives me goose pimples…

What happened next…I can’t even kid about, although I’ve been getting grief since last night…ie Briank’s Trophy Walleye Adventures.

The shallow rod had a funny bend in it and was pumping slightly…Chappy was on it like a guy seeing a 6 pack of beer after 20 days in the desert…set the hook and FISH ON!

But again I was a little worried as it just seemed to be a small cat…as it rolled 20 feet behind the boat. As it neared, we got a glimps it it’s tail…I thought it was a muskie!

Turns out it was an awesome looking 29+ inch eye that tipped the digital to just over 10 lbs…she had an 18 inch girth…

Looking at this fish up close and personal…it was actually scary…with eye’s as big as quarters and teeth that I’ve only seen on a northern. It demanded respect.

As I was admiring this monster (I’ve never seen a 10 lbs walleye in person before), Chappy was all over the second shallow rod… and brings in ANOTHER eye…28 inches!

All the way back to the landing Chappy was telling me how great of a walleye guide I was. I tried to pay him off, but he wouldn’t bite.

I guess my flat spot still isn’t ready yet this year….

And I’m not changing the name of my guide service!!!!

Thanks for joining me Chapster! It was fun and educational!

Brian, I really hope we can stay away from those roughies tonight! If it has scales, you’ll have to unhook it for me

Two bad things about last night…

The eyes were caught on flattie rods and were just winched in…and when using bullheads they have a tendency to swallow the hook.
The 10 lbs eye is going on Chappy’s wall as she was bleeding badly as soon as she came to the boat…I actually cleaned out my live well (normaly holds pop cans and empty coffee cups) and REALLY tried to reviver her. All in all, Chappy and I spend a good hour working with her to get water across her gills and she tried to stay upright…but in the end it was evedent that she wasn’t going to make it.

I won’t be going back to that spot for at least two more weeks as I’ve never caught a flathead when the eyes are biting. I don’t want to take the chance of a repeat.

I don’t care what type of fish you are into, seeing that monster turn belly up did not make me feel happy at all!

She will be going on Chappy’s wall to remind him of our night out catten.

Well done fellas. I have to say I have never caught walleye that big while fishing for cats.

Excellent guiding Briank . Regardless of the fish caught.

    I think I see a pattern developing;
    BK on Basscenter
BK listening to a twins game
    BK catching BIG wallayes

might want to check and see if there are new 6s in the boat numbers Brian, and keep an eye peeled for locusts.

    Very nice fish guys
and for the efforts to revive!

It’s nice to hear you guys tried your best to revive her. Kudos for your effort.

I have never heard of someone pulling in a flathead that went belly up, has it ever happened to anyone? Sometimes I get the feeling you could beach a Flathead for an our and it would still dart off the second you put her back in…not that I am going to try it. I still work quick to get my catch back in.

If you happen to hook them in the gill rakes and they bled (a lot) they are likely not going to make it…although they do swim away on a quick release…

Good thing is that the chances of hooking them in the rakes is pretty slim.

Kind of a silly question isn’t it? Consider who you are fishing with.

I don’t think BK uses circles for flats.

Nope, exclusivly Gamakatsu 10/0’s. The only draw back to them is that at times, they are too small…and if you’re not paying attention, gut hooking them.

Mile 832 had a good way to get the hook out of a gut hooked fish…Tim, if you still have that, reposting it might be helpful to us types with short memories.

Chappy…. Congrats on one heck of a fish!!! Brian asked me to post a few pics just to ease the he has been getting. I pm him the other day about the eyes because I had spent about 3 trips early this year looking for some promising area for flatties. Once the high water hit I went back to check up on some areas and figured I might as well run some raps and sure enough we hit some sumos also. Well here we are agian having the same results as you Brian. Classic cat waters just off the main channel break and what happens Gotta love high water!
Lesson learned is if you want to catch eyes….correction BIG eyes you have to think like a cat!!! The ones that like big meals

    30″

And my lady with here biggest eye to date 28″

I have pulled 7 eyes over 28″ in the last 3 weeks out of multiple areas that look like classic cat waters!!! So I guess the kitties must like eyes for dinner as well Or they can still smell the cat slime on my equipment from 8 months ago
