Do any of you know when the best catfish bite is according to temperature range on the mississippi river? As in do the cats (channel and flatheads) start biting more agressively and move around more when the water temps. hit 60 or above in the early season? And where are the most likely type of locations to find them in, wing damns, holes, damns, near feeder creeks, river bends, etc.? Any help would be appreciated.

Locations.. all of the above. When the flatheads turn on, they will be everywhere in prime feeding areas putting on weight.

Water temps.. They are known to start moving at around 50 degrees for the magical number which I agree with. Now to chase them right now and get them to grab, AND EAT a bait is not proving itself to be easy.

I believe that the flats that are going to leave the wintering areas have all left and most are either in the spawning areas or very close to arriving.

The main problem I’m having is not being on the water. It’s a long summer and I’m just not ready to feel the 50 degree rain yet

If your fishing down stream of Prescott use two lines, one with a 50 cent size cutbait..the other with live bait.

The cutbait will give you some action on channels and a chance at a flat as this time of year seems to be the best time for a flat on cut.

The areas you’ve mentioned above…as Fisher Dave indicated will just turn on as more an more fish enter that particular area.

    Good Fishen!

My favorite water temp on the Mississippi is when it’s approaching 70 and the fish are pre-spawn. If you could only get out a few times in the year, to me, that would be the best time to go.

Thanx guys. For the time being I’m pondering if I wanna try the hastings area or redwing area this weekend. Not sure which might be better. Never fished for flatheads in the redwing area but if Im lucked out hoping to tag some forktails. Anyone have some opinions on fishing redwing area vs. hastings?
