For MN cat men, (MN has dumb laws about what can be used for bait, such as no carp or bluegills) what is your favorite flathead bait?
Also, for anyone in the Twin Cities area, do you know of anywhere to catch suckers or creek chubs?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

If I’m not mistaken I thought you could use carp for bait. They aren’t a gamefish thus making them legal to use. I like to use shad and golden roach shiners I get out of the river.

No carp for bait. It is the one rough fish specifically mentioned as illegal for bait.

All other rough fish are OK.

Carp are not legal as far as I know. Bullheads, chubs and wild suckers are all good flathead bait. I dont know metro too much about metro bait streams. Check your area bait shops. Lots of metro lakes have bullheads.

Page 13 of the MN regs:

Using whole or parts of gamefish, goldfish or carp is unlawful.

Feed them to your bullhead bait.

Hey RiveRat, I get my flathead bait out of Minnehaha Creek. There are lots of chubs, suckers & some bullheads in the creek. I fish the Mpls./Edina area, but the whole creek has bait. Just look for the deeper water, which is only about 3 feet usually. Also, check under the bridges. A small ice-jig tipped with a piece of worm or power nibble will catch them. Also, 9-Mile creek in Bloomington has some good bait. Good luck, Vern

thanks for the replies. forgot Minnehaha creek, I will have to check that out. Yeah I have a good spot for bullhead, and I net shiners and shad, but I have never done that well using bullheads for bait, and shad die too easily.
