It has to be about that time

    Tis’ the season..

Water temps are close to 60 degrees in some areas, The water is still moderately high with a respectable flow, the bullheads are getting active, and the larger channel cats have pulled out of the spring bite and the little kitties are relentless… and most importantly… the FULL MOON CYCLE is long gone!

We are much warmer on the water temps this year than we were last year at the end of the 1st week in May.. That happens to be exactly when the flatheads started a good bite for the season.

Even though we have had so much warm weather, outings have been unsuccessful so far this year. The water has been plenty warm, but the fish never turned on the feedbag which suggest that there are more deciding factors on the bite/migration than just the water temperature.

With all that said.. I am looking at other factors besides water temperature. Ignoring the date, and the temperatures.. I am mentally following a sequence that happens every year in my area. The bite 1st starts with the early spring channel cat run.. That bite eventually dies down and the undesireable species(bass, walleyes, northerns, panfish, sheephead, scaled fish), along with channel cats start to get very active and provide the river panfisherman with some decent multi-specie angling in the shallows when our cats rods just sit there and only pick up a straggler fish here and there. This action with the game fish does not usually provide consistant action in the area they are being caught until May… or the exact same time the flatheads start to really turn on the feedbag. The larger fish tend to get active 1st, and the smaller fish will start to mix into the bag a couple weeks down the road.

Well.. that mixed bag fishing started a few days ago and is consistent. Crappies and white bass are still tearing up the minnows in the shallows in most areas.. sheephead are showing no mercy to anyone throwing a nightcrawler in the river, and the carp are hitting moving baits.

I’m willing to bet a half dozen 7″ bullheads the 1st flathead hits the shore this week. I would also lay odds we will see a 40# fish(or very close) by this coming sunday.

I’m off to finish my work for the day, then I’m wetting a line for a few hours. I dont have time to go get bullheads.. so I’ll have to rely on one of those legendary urban sylvania suckers!

The race is on to see who weighs in the first good flathead. The St Croix is still out of its banks but coming down about 6 inches a day. When it is out of its banks and the islands and shoreline timber is all flooded I just can’t seem to find the cats. I know they have to be prowling up in all that timber eating nightcrawlers, bugs, grubs, and other unmentionable waste products. The white bass are on a tear right now and my good spots are showing some signs of active baitfish. That darn beaver is out again in my favorite spot and is already giving me hell.

I’ve got a bait tank full of nice, healthy bullheads and a big surprising bunch of bonus shiners. One of my bullie spots was full of big shiners.

I’m hoping to beat you to the punch this year, Dave. St Croix should be back inside its banks, water temp is good and bait fish are active. I plan on hitting it hard the end of this week. Conditions should be about right for the start of the prespawn bite.

I’ll be scrounging for some bullheads after work and they’ll be getting a nice, big Gamakatsu in them later this week The race is on!

I’ll be on the river this afternoon.. not too long after this frozen pizza is done in the oven!

Waiting until the end of the week Steve? I have a feeling you’ll be too late for the 1st fish by then!

If you feel like taking the drive into town, I can show you where to dunk a few of those bullies!

Dave, you can represent us all on the water today. Temp right now is 52 degrees on its way to 34. Wind from the NW at 18 gusting to 30 mph. No Twins game on tonight.

Tomorrow the Twins start a series against KC and the temp will be moderating to a little warmer with less wind. I need a Twins game to help pass the time. I may get out tomorrow or more probably Wednesday. I definitely will bring along my Mr Buddy heater. I’m a warm weather catter – come on warm weather!

I had atleast a 40 pounder hit a walleye jig last night, was easily 4 feet long. had him on top of the water for about 5 minutes, 3 missed net attempts and one finally attempt which caused our small walleye net to break at the handle, the hook came out and the pig swam away.

I saw somethign while fighting this fish for little over 30 minutes that i have never seen before, there were probably 8-10 smaller 2-3 pound cats following this hog around everywere it ran. they were all over the thing like they were trying to attack it/protect it i couldnt really tell

Like destroyers follwing a cruiser or an aircraft carrier? I have never heard of that but it sounds pretty awesome.

Maybe they were like the pilot fish that follow sharks?

Never heard of it with cats, but it’s quite common with *gasp* smallmouth bass and northerns. I’m guessing they were curious and hoping that the big guy would drop some food for them.

They must have been really active. All fish will do that, even the super intellligent, beautiful, hardfighting largemouth bass when they are really turned on. They were looking to steal whatever the big guy had or get at least catch a scrap or two.

I’m out too, Manny. The race is on to see who gets the first nice fish. Should be a nice night. Twins play KC at 1:10pm today so no night game to listen too.

Manny, we had zero runs last night. I’ll be at the early season spot this evening, but not too late.

    Good One!

I am going to hit it either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Gonna use the gift certificate from F Warehouse tonight to get a good telescoping pole so we can give Dave’s a rest when I am around. If anyone else is hitting it this weekend, you can PM your cell and I will reply with mine. I have certain spots that I have never hit that I want to try and that way if either mine or your spot gets “hot”, we can let the other know. I think spreading out may pay off.

If it ever quits raining this weekend, I’ll be out charting some new water.

We’ll be seeing you around eventually Noober! Dont be a stranger.

I just read on “another website” that a few guys hauled in 4 small (3-10 pounds) flatheads last night on the Minnesota. That’s a good sign, I think.
