I have 300yrd spools of #30 and #50 Berkley BigGame. I just use them for making leaders, so I have like 275yrds of both. They’re a little over a year old and look ok. So do I just toss them or should they be ok?

    Thanks

If the spool has been kept in a climate controlled area–like your house and not in the sun, you will be ok, as long it is not exposed to extreme heat. Once the stuff is exposed to the elements it can deteriorate. Are you looking to spool it on a reel or to keep using it as a leader?

Phil, like mentioned, if it was kept inside and out of the sun, it’ll be fine. UV light is a mono killer, as is heat. I just keep mine in a closet and it’s fine for a few years. If you have any doubts, though, I’d toss it. Mono is cheap enough.

I guess I am the outlier here, but Berkley big game is less than $8 for over 700 yards – casual or fun fishing I would run with it – it would not see a tournament however.

I just use it as a leader. I’ve kept it out of the sun and cool.
