Which catfish bait chunks have worked best for channel cats for you? Chicken liver? Beef liver? Or ones with cheese mixed in? or ???
    Thanks, Bill

Never tried them. I prefer cut bait (sucker, shiner, etc) for channel cats.

..and I prefer BIGGER chunks of cutbait than Ralph.

Bill, I’m thinking you are going to become IDA’s Cat Bait Chunk Expert this year!

Yeah, I saw your hook-up ratio compared to mine I use pretty big chunks when the water warms up. Half of a large sucker seems to work pretty well in warm water for me. We don’t all have super-secret shiner lakes in Wisconsin

I noticed HOF has some chunk baits in stock along with the stinkbait too so thought I’d try some. Which smell/taste of the chunk baits should I try?

    Thanks, Bill

Bill – I’ve only tried bait chunks and dip baits a few times with limited success. The few times I tried it all I would get are little ones that peck, peck, peck you to death. I gave up right away on dip baits because it is so messy and the results were so limited. It was a hot, sunny day and that c#!$ grossed out my boat.

I don’t eat fish, especially now after seeing that channel cat that Brian caught the other day . After seeing that picture, all I eat is hamburger well done hockey puck fashion . I am catch and release only so I am not interested in eating size cats. I want the big bruisers and my confidence bait for that is a good sized chunk of cut bait.

WOW, only 1 minute for an answer. Man you are fast. Most cats on Lake Zumbro/Zumbro River will be on the small side and fished for during the day. So it looks like cutbait is the way to go. I also don’t eat fish and put them back to catch again. Basicly I plan to fish for different spieces of fish this year. In other words I plan to enjoy whats bitin and do alot of multispieces fishing. Just want more time on the water fishin.
    Thanks, Bill

Bill – Since you are chasing multi-species you might give live bait a try. I’ve caught channels on live bait many times and you might also entice a walleye, northern, smallmouth, etc., etc. I’ve fished live medium suckers, shiners and small bullheads and caught channels. A good technique is to make a few shallow slits in their side with a sharp fillet knife so you get some juices flowing but not so deep as to kill them, try to keep them alive.

Thanks Steve. I’ll try that. I’ve chased walleyes for along time and now want to get back to fishing for different fish like I use to. Started doing it again last year and had a blast. Now want to add more fish. The only catfishing I’ve done is fish them with nightcrawlers and a bobber. Nothing big but alot of fun on lighter tackle.
    Thanks, Bill

It depends on the time of year. I like to bring live suckers for Cutbait, Liver, Frogs and other baits never the bags you buy in stores, but something fresh. I hook up something different baits on each hook. If I catch two or three fish on the same bait I go to that.
