Well… it came back to haunt him yesterday.
In all seriousness though, we have never seen a diseased fish come out of that spot. The other 21 fish caught here yesterday were all beautiful. Not sure what happened to this poor guy.

I know many of the fish tend to concentrate in the upper lock. I wonder if this was something caused by a previous injury that resulted in infection?
Its not that uncommon to get fish with scars, or missing an eye(healed over), etc.. I suppose that can happen when they get into the lock and it cycles for the boats.. kind of like getting flushed through a industrial 2 billion gallon toilet! If they hit anything on the way out, its going to hurt!
I guess what surprises me most is that fish Brain caught was actively feeding?
That is one nasty looking kitty
Where the three swollen spots hard or soft? Whatever they are, it looks sore
Umm… Are you crazy? We didn’t touch the swollen spots. Yuck!
Dave was wondering if there may have been 4 bumps. He was bleeding pretty good after Brian got the hook out.
I’m with Sherry! Normally I lick the slime off my fingers…but in this case…I stayed away from them…ewww!
I sent the photo to the DNR, we’ll see if they’ve seen this before.
The poor guy. I guess the fact you caught him was a good sign that he at least has an appetite. I am wondering if since there are 4 of them and it is kind of symetric, that it may just be a mutation.
Maybe he’s related to Blinky the Fish. He could be a Monticello born cat.
Im thinking he spent too much time down by 3M Sounds like there finally catching on to some of the crap they have been dumpping in p2 here.
I hope you put that out of its misery. A fishery biologist may have been interested in that. I have never seen anything like it.
I did send the photos to the DNR, haven’t heard anything yet. I’m guessing Monday was a snow day for them.
I used to have a giant fish encyclopedia around here that had information on all known species of fish. It had a section on diseases and I swear I have seen that before in pictures. I dont know where the book ever went, but I am sure some computer savy person might be able to find something online? I dont know if it was a disease, or an infection caused by injury.. I know it looked pretty rough.
I did the same Dave.
I have raised everything from fresh water to salt water fish. I went through my books and can’t find a match The DNR response will be interesting. I can’t wait to hear it.
Not exactly the response I was hoping for…or expecting….

Hello,
I was asked to respond to your inquiry.Uff da, that’s a sad-looking fish. What to do with is a personal decision. I might have put it down. The growths look like tumors of some sort, which isn’t out of the ordinary.

Hahahaha! The official response contained the phrase “Uff Da!” Only in Minnesota.
Uf Dah!
Mr. Stevens
Only in Brian’s world.
Best one in months. Can’t hardly type for the tears.
