I know this isnt the Mississippi river, but this is the *the place* to talk cats..

Anyone here ever been down there? Any tips/information I can get is welcome.

I am leaving here on Thursday(2nd) and will be floating around on 56,000 acres with 980 miles of shoreline in search of Blues.. I cant wait!

I have been doing my homework. There have been reports for about a month that they are getting some blues in the creek mouths, and more current reports that a couple jug fishermen are getting a few big blues per set in 60′ of water with the lines set down 20′-40’… It sounds like some drift fishing is in order!

It will be a learning experience. The only drifting I have done for suspended fish is for Salmon in the Pacific ocean(mooching?)… The only difference will be we will be using large chunks of shad(or whatever else is handy) vs herring. The many articles I have read, I guess its very common to come into these fish in schools somewhere around the masses of shad. A person can go a while without a bite, but when you get over the fish it is common to get several fish on at once.. like a feeding frenzy.

I do not know what realistic expectations are for the trip. I will be happy just to find some fish and put a few in the boat. I know there are some true monsters swimming in those waters.. they get many fish a year between 50-70 pounds, and they say fish up to 30 pounds are average size fish.

If anyone has some tips it would be helpful. I am excited to go! Only a few more days.

I’ll be waiting for the text message!

I would advise taking some anticeptic wipes along in case one of those 70 pounders decides to “Manny Slap”!

Sorry Dave, I don’t even know someone that knows someone for that area.

Ps…you can use 33 rods per angler…did you get your holders installed?

I have 4 rod holders in easy reach.. thats enough for me to keep track of. I might put in a couple more at the last minute.. who knows… Manny doesnt need more than 1 holder does he?

I think Manny will be more careful with these fish… I dont think I’m big enough to drag him back in the boat! Pictures come out better without a black eye and a couple teeth missing!

This just sounds so much better to me than drilling through 18″ of ice to watch little blinking lights on a flasher, and hope to feel a bite on the end of the line… Instead, we will be floating in 60 degree weather watching 1000’s of marks on the graph hoping one bites the line?

Did I mention I cant wait? I think the weather forecast for tomorrow is 80 down there.. wish I could go get a sunburn to start the trip early.

They made it down there this morning. I guess the dam is not running, so there isn’t much current, but they are going to do their best to get some action.

Dave took a nap this morning, after driving down. Manny had a couple nibbles from shore. They said a guy across the way got a walleye.

I just talked to them again and they are headed out in the boat. I’ll update ya know when I hear more…

LOL Brian, they will be lovin you.

Thanks for the update, Sherry. I’m sure I’ll see you, Dave, and Tyler soon at the “hot spot” for some good spring action!

Spoke the FD just a few minutes ago. He and the Manny just finished dropping the lines in and are watching big targets swim through the sonar along with large schools of bait fish.

They’re back at the hotel in town. Didn’t have much luck with the fish today… and now the van is giving them troubles. Dave just had a fuel pump put in it the other day, and it seems to have been a bad pump. So we’ll see what tomorrow brings for them.

    Just talked to Dave…

The van was towed to the shop this morning and just got done. Ingition module or something went out?? Whatever it was it wasn’t cheap.

But they’re not letting that ruin things. They are at McDonald’s having a burger right now, then they’re headed out fishing. They got a dozen goldfish for bait, so hopefully they like those better than the frozen stuff.

He said he’d call me again when they get settled in fishing, I’ll post any news he gives me.

I guess I can give the last report(notice the date). We are home real early .. washout, poor weather pattern stalled.

The van gave plenty of trouble. The fuel pump I had replaced was faulty(new).. and the ignition module decided to quit to give small shop USA some ammo to shoot at me.

We made it out once again as Sherry posted. Manny had one little nibble and that was it in a couple hours fishing with 6 lines total. We opted to move(shore fishing) to another location we knew the fish were..

Well.. about 45 minutes later we made it to where we wanted to fish just to feel the gale force winds rocking the van. I put the van in gear to move to another out of the way spot.. shortly after I noticed plenty of strobe action in the night sky.. A thunderstorm was very near. I checked the radar and learned that there was going to be no end for at least 18 hours(rain/t-storms).

I made the decision to point the truck back towards town since we had to return tomorrow night anyhow(rain forcast for day). We had only lost a couple hours fishing due to the break down.. it rained the majority of saturday too when the vehicle was being repaired . The area has been in severe drought, so they needed the rain, but couldnt it wait?

All in all, I’m glad I went. It’s a nice area and there are a ton of fish.. just make sure you have a cast net for fresh shad, they dont like frozen. The people in the area are very friendly, and offer great hospitality. My graph was constantly full of fish and I could see one of my lines under the transducer.. and watch all the really big fish come up to investigate my bait… but they rarely hit it, and never held it. We found the fish and they were exactly where they were supposed to be, but had the wrong menu.

It was a learning experience. I will be back down for round 2 before long.. once I pay off the money I had to borrow for vehicle maintenece bills ($700 )

I cant say I appreciate my trip home today.. I took a quick nap just north of Kansas City and awoke around 5:30 this morning. The thunderstorm was giving us all it could. I continued to drive through the storm, it eventually turned into heavy rain, then tapered off. The sun nearly came out for a minute just north of DesMoines(sp?).. then it started to rain, then sleet, then freezing rain.. shortly after it was blizzard conditions. Many accidents, cars, trucks, semi’s.. ambulences on a regular basis… it was driving meyhem. The roads started to get better in the Albert Lea area. Happy to be driving on a normal wet road I got to drive the speed limit to Owatonna… then the traffic jam came with emergency vehicles everywhere, several vehicles piled up and tons of accidents north of Medford on I35.. they closed the highway so off to the detour we go.. back roads that I think took us into Faribault and half the road in that town before hitting I35 more than an hour later(10 mile detour).

Ok.. I was glad to take the trip even though we had difficulties and some rough luck.. but I am glad to be home now, and to be fishing a couple miles from home in days to come. I have had enough drama to last for a while.

I think Sherry and Tyler are enjoying the last of our live bait (goldfish)… at least something came good out of the trip.

I am going to lay low for the evening and relax, maybe find a beer.. and possibly go beat up the weatherman that gave the great forecast a couple days ago!

It was a rough trip and things may have not gone as well as planned (do they ever?) but I have no regrets. I had as good a time as one can despite our difficulties and bad luck. And yes, the fish were there but as mentioned before, they weren’t in the mood for frozen shad. I’m sure if the weather would have at least cooperated, we would have caught some fish. Dave gave an accurate summary of our trip and there really isn’t much I can add.

All in all, it was nice to get away from big-city life for a little bit and take in some new sights.

Now that I’m back home and have since regrouped, I’m goin’ fishin’
