Above: Chris Hanson with his eater cat.

Chris Hanson or as he’s known in these parts simple as “Hanson” and I planned a trip to the Horseshoe Chain a number of weeks ago…back with we thought we would have some ice this year. “Things” happened and the date was changed to Sunday, so I thought I would give it a shot myself on Saturday.

After checking in with Scott Stiel on ice conditions, I thought I would check at the local bait shop. The young man behind the counter said “I donnow”. I don’t know why I would think a local bait shop would have current ice conditions.

Once reaching the public access and unloading the wheeler (I wouldn’t drive my truck on most lakes with the weather we’ve been having), a couple guys were coming off on their wheeler. In talking to them about the ice, they mentioned that where I was going, a pickup just drove out not more than 15 minutes ago. There’s always one ding dong on every lake I thought.

With the Polar 3 man in tow, off I went. I didn’t go far when I noticed the current had open the water along the right bank. I stayed to the left but watched like a driver watches a bad driver in the lane next to him. As I came to the opening of the lake, I noticed a truck close to shore, a half dozen wheelers and what looked like the sled portion of a Polar tipped up side down on the ice….and the ice didn’t have any snow on it. I proceeded forward slowing down to see what was going on. Remember the pickup? YUP! The over turned fish house was the top 12 inches of a pickup cab! Because there was enough people there already, I didn’t go over to see if they needed any assistance. A few minutes later they were trying to pull the pick up out with two other pickups. Not sure how everything came out…but it was gone when went home. Either they pulled it out or they sunk’er deeper!

Moral of this story? I’ll give you three guesses and the first two don’t count!

On to fishing. All I had with me was some shad that I bought on the internet. The MarCum was showing fish and when I dropped the camera down, the cat’s would come in and just wave their tail at me. They wouldn’t even sniff it! I can guess that there was 30 cat’s on my camera through out the afternoon with out a peck! Now that’s frustrating!

Above Mile 832 and friend were landing Tim’s first cat on ice.

Sunday, much better but not up to the standards of the Horseshoe chain. Our two man outing turned into six man and Mile 832….. (That’s a zinger Tim!). We moved to 38 to 40 feet of water, used Glow Devils and the head of a fathead. Action wasn’t fast, but it was steady in the morning. Both Mile 832 and I landed our first cat through the ice today. Giving credit where credit is due, Miles’ fish was a nice chunky channel where mine was a little on the short side.

Normally I don’t kiss channel cat’s on the lips, but as this was a first for me, I felt a personal affection to her and gave her a long “embrace”. I knew the way she croaked at me, we made that “personal connection”. I could have sworn while I was gently returning her to the water I heard her say, “I love you too BrianK!”

Unfortunately, I must have run out of film on my digital camera because I don’t have a picture of Miles or my first iced cat!

I think everyone caught at least one cat with one dandy walleye caught and released. There were about 5 dandy crappies iced too.

Glad to see you guys at least got a few for your efforts… and stayed on top of the ice.

Is it just me, or does hanson look like someone popular in that picture above? I can put the face to the name..

Anybody ever watch the movie Bad Santa? What would the kid look like in a stocking hat? Or is it an aged *Mikey* from the old cereal commercial?

    No pun intended Chris!

It was a good day to be on the ice yesterday, a little windy but the sun was out and the temperature was warm. You can’t say that too often for mid-January fishing.

Fishing was tough. I’ve never had such a hard time catching the chain kitties and we were very limited with the spots we could try because of unfavorable ice conditions.

I was bragging to Brian this fall about the awesome ice cattin’ on the chain and the kitties decided not to cooperate. Heck, by midday, they completely disappeared from the area we were fishing.

We then decided to get on some crappies & gills and they were even problematic for us. We eventually managed a few nice crappies for the pail but they were picky.

Briank got his 1st ice cat of the year, Mile 832 got his 1st ice cat ever (Tim, they are addicting aren’t they?), I think fishhead managed 1, and I got a couple and lost one at the top of the hole.

I’ve got a pic of Tim with a cat that I’ll post later.

Hanson! I’m glad you got a pic of Tim with his first Cat!

I took two pics and they were no where to be found to the MMC card! Never had that happen before!

    PS Correction.

    ICE CONDITIONS POST!

We entered Horseshoe Lake via the river launch along HWY 22. I recieved a Private Message stating that it’s too dangerous to enter safely there. I would have to agree with the open water, current and the truck going in.

This is not a lake to go out on at night if you aren’t framiliar with it! In fact, there is a spot that isn’t marked where methane gas is bubbling up and there’s open water (not much) in the middle of the lake.

If you’re plannng a trip to the Horseshoe change, I would suggest that you should have someone that knows the lake take you this year.

As the DNR states, no ice it totally safe. More so this year on the Horseshoe Chain.

Winter , Spring, Summer, or Fall,
We need no stinking gloves at all!

Thanks for hauling us around on the trailer, Brian. It was a great day on the ice and everyone was good company.

Why did I know that one was coming? BTW, I’m bringing up your favorite cooler tomorrow.
