Just got my new In-Fisherman and there is a great article by Dr Jason Vokoun titled “24 Hour Flatheads – Daily Movements Revealed”. He offers some insights into daily flathead movements based on his tracking studies. Based on observed flathead movements the fish were stationary an average of 23.07 hours each day. When they did move it was essentially straight-line movements from one habitat feature to another. They spent the majority of the day tight to cover and while they are definitely feeding in the summer they are not out chasing baitfish, in the shallows or anywhere else. He felt flatheads are moving around from structure to structure, so concentrate on fishing tight to that structure. It sounds like 23 hours out of the day that is where they are holding up.
An interesting article – kind of has me already planning some tactics and techniques for this next summer season.
