I purchased an Ugly Cat fishing pole and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what type of reel to put on it for catching the cats.

i really like the Abu Garcia 6500 series reels. Its got a clicker which is a necesity. I use a left handed 6501, cuz i lack the coordinaiton to reel a big cat in with my right hand

If your going to use the rod primarily for channels cats the 6500 is a good choice. So are the smaller Quantum Big Iron reels.

If your going to use the reel for flatheads in heavy cover alot you may want to bump up your reel size a notch to something like a Garcia 7000 or Big Iron 430CX. The 6500’s will work but they dont take large diameter mono like 40-50 lb Big Game as well. Iv’e got two 430’s and like em alot. Silky smooth and cast very well.

The Penn reel I have is tuff and durable but it is tuff to cast and it doesn’t have direct drive??? In other words you have to flip the lever to engage the reel rather than just turning the handle. Something you dont want to think about when a big fish is running off with your bait. Forget to flip the switch and set the hook and you’ve got a big mess on you hands.

I would highly recommend the ABU Big Game series or reels. Serious performance and built to handle large amounts of 20-40 cat line.

Spool it up with some Hi-Vis 30-40 BERKLEY IRON SILK and you will be amazed at the casting performance and strength.

I wenched in several tons of cats on my BIG GAME ABU’s last year, they perform like new and are ready for more.

Couple questions. How does the Iron Silk compare to Berkley’s Big Game line as far as diameter and castability. I saw that it comes in 50 lb test so it has the possibilty of being a good flathead line. Also I saw that the Big Game series reel come in the 7000 model. Cabelas has the 7000C3 reel for 94$ which is a good price. Is it worth the extra money to spring for the Big Game reel?? Any comments???

Hey Dirk how are you? I hope all is well. I bought some Iron silk about a month ago. The diameter is slightly thicker other then that it is like mono, but it cast very well. I first used it down in AL. at the wheeler res.damn. I only used 20lb test but hauled in a few blues over 30lb and one over 40 I was fishing under a damn with lots of rocks and stuff. Iron silk held up very well. since I’ve been back in MN I’ve used it twice on 40 degree days didn’t freeze up or anything. I like the line very much. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble bringing in all the big cats you catch.

Well I’ve been doing some soul searching. I’m almost 30 and I feel Like I need to make some diffrent goals in life. So I went on a trip. You know, I went to find myself. 30 to me is a second chance . I feel like I’m about to be a “man” I’m now no longer a young man. Don’t get me wrong 30 is young but now life is going to get good. I’m much smarter about life then I was 20. Things that were important; like chasing girls to only have sex with them, just to say I did or getting drunk. I wanted name brand clothes and told lies to impress people. I wouldn’t change much of what I’ve done but now I can do it again only I’ll do it the right way. Then when I turn 40 I’ll understand life a little better I’ll start to really become wise. I’m a good person and now I know I don’t need to prove it, I just need to be…

I don’t know if I’m making since to you and maybe what I’ve talked about was never a issue to you or I could just be a late bloomer I don’t know? I’m really feeling good about me now and it doesn’t matter what others think. I don’t have be like the rest. I can be me.

Hopefully I didn’t sound to sappy, but you asked.

    Thanks for caring

I do alot of cat fishing. One of my favorite reels is the Penn 965. I cast very well and the drag system is one of the smoothest I have found. I also fish with A.G.’s. The 6500 series and 7000 are very hard to beat.Good luck and tight lines
