Pool 6 Mudcat Trip

I’ve been lurking on the catfish forum for a while, but I decided I would wait to post until I had something to report.

I made a late-night mudcat fishing trip to the Winona area last night, and had decent success. Fishing from shore, I got two flatheads–one off a live creek chub, and the other off a live sucker. I wish the flat cats had been bigger (22″ and 28″), but it is better than sitting out all night and catching nothing. I hope to make it up there one more night while I am back in the area, but we will see.

You are so right Vikefan! And that is exactly what I did…Not a run…and it sure wasn’t for the effort! 15 minutes…move…15 minutes…move….15 minutes…move…15 minutes…move

Glad you got into some fish…got any tips for me?

    Good for you, VikeFan!
Ya did better than we did too. One guy with us got a little Flat early in the evening, before I got there.
Only thing I saw caught was Dave’s net… after Ralph lost it in the river.

I went out again last night around Winona, and pulled in a 27″ mudcat on a live sucker. From my experience when I lived around there, when the water is this low I hit current breaks on the main channel itself, which is where I got my fish this week. The rain stayed to the south of me until after 2:00 a.m., so I got a decent amount of fishing in.

    Hey VikeFan,

You didn’t take off from the landing in a really BIG boat around 11:30ish did ya?

Nope–I put my really small boat on the trailer at sundown and fished for mudcat from shore. When I fish by myself after dark, I don’t much care for fishing from a boat–not so much a safety issue (there is that too, though) as it is a boredom issue. On shore waiting for a flatcat to show up, I can walk around, poke along the shoreline looking for stuff, throw rocks, chase coon away, and otherwise keep myself awake and amused. Sitting in a boat by myself in the dark for hours drives me crazy or puts me to sleep.
